These past school holidays, I had the immense fortune of accompanying a group of 21 Secondary students to Nagasaki, Japan, with Mr Williamson and Mrs Hazama de Guzman from VS Oceania. There, I was able to witness the many wonderful qualities of our students under both positive and negative circumstances. I was also able to see firsthand how they were perceived and treated by other people outside our community. Mr Williamson will share more below, but I am very happy to report that our students are, without exception, a credit to their parents and to their school. Many thanks to Mrs Hazama de Guzman for organising the experience, and to our hosts at Nagasaki Nishi High School. Having experienced this exchange first-hand, I hope many families will take up the opportunity to host a Japanese student, and also that many students will be eager to join future exchanges and travel to Japan.
One of the lessons I took away from the trip, and which I shared at assembly with our Secondary Students, is the importance of making good use of time. On the final day of our stay in Nagasaki, as our host families dropped off their Wollemi students, there were many tears and displays of emotion. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of connection made in just a handful of days. Much can happen in a very short period of time. In contrast, we can all be guilty of wasting time. Specifically, we can look at the approaching busy end-of-year period and hope it will be over soon. Instead, this term’s focusat Wollemi will be on ‘finishing the year well’: making every day of this short term count, especially concerning end-of-year exams.
Our HSC students started their exams last Tuesday, and so far, have reported no mishaps or unpleasant surprises. They continue to rely on the prayers of our community, and I continue to reassure them that all our families are remembering them in their prayers. We are all praying especially Michael M, who is undergoing medical treatment that prevents him from sitting the HSC. Many of our class of 2025 have shaved their heads in solidarity with Michael. More importantly, they are praying and offering up many hours of study for Michael’s successful treatment and speedy recovery. I ask all our families to pray for Michael, for Raph and Ella, Patrick and Josephine. It is this unity in prayer that makes this such a special community.

Wollemi Students Experience Japan — A Journey to Remember
Wollemi Students Experience Japan — A Journey to Remember

During the second week of the Holidays, 21 students from Years 9, 10, and 11set off for an unforgettable trip to Nagasaki, Japan. The journey didn’t start as planned — after boarding the flight to Tokyo, we were asked to disembark due to engine issues. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Mrs Hazama de Guzman, new flights were arranged, and after an unexpected night near Sydney Airport, we flew out the next morning via Hong Kong. Our group of young men showed great resilience and positivity throughout.
After a very long trip, we finally made it to Tokyoand boarded another flight to Nagasaki — we’d made it! Before meeting their host families, the group explored some of Nagasaki’s most historic sites, including the Atomic Bomb Museumand Oura Cathedral. The visit to the museum was deeply moving — the students witnessed the devastation caused by the atomic bombing and reflected on the immense human suffering that followed. Yet, what stood out most was how the Japanese people have transformed this tragedy into a message of hope and peace, creating a lasting reminder of the importance of compassion and reconciliation.
One of the more memorable parts of the trip was the involvement with Nagasaki Nishi West High School, where the boys were made to feel incredibly welcome. They engaged in a range of cultural activities, including a Nagasaki history lesson, origami(with Mr Ramos quickly earning the title of number one origami expert), onigiri(rice ball cooking), Kanji calligraphy, a Japanese tea ceremony, and even Kendo. Later in the day, small groups of Japanese students took our boys on guided tours of the Peace Parkand the Atomic Bomb Hypocenter— the exact point above which the atomic bomb detonated on 9 August 1945. These visits offered powerful lessons in history, remembrance, and peace, as students stood on ground that has since become a symbol of resilience and the commitment to a world without nuclear weapons. The days spent at the school were not only an enriching cultural exchange for our students but also gave the Japanese students a valuable opportunity to practise their English conversation skills.
Perhaps the most special part of the trip was the bond the boys formed with their host families. While initially out of their comfort zones, the nature and character of our students shone through, andgenuine connections were built in a very short time. These bonds were clear on the final day at Brick Hall, where many teary farewells showed just how meaningful the experience had been for both our students and their Japanese hosts.
A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Hazama de Guzman, whose calm and collected leadership under pressure ensured the success of the trip from start to finish. She worked tirelessly—often late into the night and early in the morning—to secure alternative flights, manage logistics, and ensure the care and safety of every single student, including Mr Ramos and me. Her professionalism, dedication, and steady guidance were instrumental in turning what began as a challenge into a truly memorable and rewarding experience for all.
We encourage Wollemi families to consider hosting visiting Japanese studentswhen the opportunity arises next year. Hosting is not only a wonderful way to welcome others into our community, but also an enriching cultural experience for your own family — one that fosters friendship, understanding, and a lasting connection between our two schools.

"You have prayed the Holy Rosary together: prayer, as John Paul IIhighlighted, with a Marian appearance and a Christological heart, which “has all the depth of the Gospel message in its entirety” (Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 16 October 2002, 1).
And, in effect, meditating on the Joyful Mysteries, along the way, you entered and stopped, as in a pilgrimage, in many places of the life of Jesus: in the house of Nazareth, contemplating the Annunciation; in that of Zechariah, contemplating the Visitation, which we are celebrating today; in the grotto of Bethlehem, contemplating the Nativity; in the Temple of Jerusalem, contemplating the presentation and then the finding of Jesus. You have been accompanied, in the Hail Mary repeated with faith, by the words of the Angel to the Mother of God: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” (Lk 1:28), and those of Elizabeth who welcomes her with joy: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Lk 1:42).
Let us look, then, at our existence as a journey following Jesus, to be travelled, as we have done this evening, together with Mary".

Primary Matters
Welcome to Term 4, the culmination of a very busy 2025!
Welcome to Term 4, the culmination of a very busy 2025!

Throughout this term, I would like all members of the Wollemi Primary community to specifically look for the quiet acts of kindness that often go unnoticed everyday. In the hustle of school life, sports, social events and Christmas preparation it's easy to overlook the kind acts happening all around us. This term, let’s all make an effort to look for these unnoticed moments and show appreciation for them!
Think of the child who helps clean up the classroom, who picks up rubbish from the playground or who cleans the toy room at home. Consider the child who notices others playing alone and chooses to sit beside them or the boy who walks into any setting with a smile on his face and gives a welcoming hello. These aren’t grand gestures, but they do carry immense weight. They reflect empathy, initiative, and a spirit of generosity and service that deserves recognition.
Appreciating these good deeds will be my focus for the remainder of 2025 and I challenge you to join me in acknowledging and rewarding acts such as these. Whether it’s a shout-out in class (or around the dinner table), a couple of Wollies or simply by saying thanks. When we celebrate kindness and acts of service, we encourage more of it. By shining a light on these everyday actions, we will build a culture where kindness and putting others before ourselves is valued and appreciated.
So let’s look around, notice the helpers, the encouragers and the quiet leaders. Let’s acknowledge them and let’s make sure their kind acts and good deeds do not go unnoticed.
Sun Safety
With Spring upon us and the heat increasing, there will be an increased focus on sun safety throughout primary. It is important that all boys come to school with a water bottle and a Wollemi hat each day.
Boys MUST wear their Wollemi hat at recess, lunchtime and during sports lessons. Boys who do not have a Wollemi hat will not be permitted to play on the fields or the covered areas at recess and lunch.
Primary school aged children should be drinking between 1 and 1.5 litres of water each day - students will be given reminders throughout the day to regularly drink water - ensuring your son has a water bottle each day will help him to form positive habits and keep hydrated.
On days of high temperatures, a “cool space” will be made available for students to remain indoors playing chess, building lego or completing quiet activities.
Forming good habits regarding sun safety are vitally important and will be a consistent message that I give to the boys throughout the very warm Term 4 ahead.

Class of 2025 HSC Mass
Class of 2025 HSC Mass
It was very well attended with 30 of our 39 boys able to come (approx 120 in total). Another reminder of the unity these young men (and their families) have. It is truly a blessing.
Matthew K lent a first-class relic of St Carlo Acutis (that his parents had gifted him)to Michael M. It was a touching moment.
You would also see quite a number sporting new haircuts in an act of solidarity with their friend.
We would like to ask you for your prayers as they commence their HSC exams this Thursday. They have been through a lot as a cohort, but your prayers give us more confidence in how they’ll be in the coming weeks.
Attached is also a photo of the beautiful flowers from the Montgrovegirls. Providence at its best, as I only realised we did not have flowers for the altar 10 minutes before mass started.
Thank you to Mr James Ramos for not hesitating to allow us to use the school Chapel so that our boys had privacy during this time.
Thank you to Mr Gerard Weber for turning up with his entire family!
Finally, thank you to Mr Jack Johnson for all the support in making this gathering happen (opening/closing up, creating the mass booklet, and supporting Fr Jeff, who generously presided over the mass).

The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount importance at Wollemi. As you would appreciate, with the commencement of a new school term, and the continued growth of the school population, the volume of traffic in and around the College has increased during afternoon pick-up.
As a result of this, we have taken some measures to improve the parking at the College with the expansion of the overflow car park. To help ensure the effective traffic flow and our Wollemi community's safety, I take this opportunity to remind you of the College’s pick-up procedures...
