                  James Ramos, Headmaster

Like the politicians say regularly, we have achieved much but there is still much more to be done. In 2024, we celebrate 25 years of a still developing school that embraces a community that is supportive, enriching and welcoming. It is a Christian community that has Christ at the centre. But it is our style of education, our involving parents as first educators, our holistic approach, our personal mentoring system, and desire for character development forged in the academic rigour that sets us apart from other schools.

A magnificent strength of the College is our families and the community spirit. Time and again I find the generosity of our mums and dads awe inspiring…..seeing at close hand their selfless dedication to their own families, and their generous contributions to the welfare of other families and parents. We see this in the support our families experience when facing difficulties or in the generous involvement of so many who facilitate sporting opportunities and community events. It is this spirit that is at the centre of what we are. It is us, as parents, who must ensure we keep this family spirit alive. We do this by staying involved, by working closely with the school and other parents; these schools add real value, they change lives!

                  The Mentoring System

                  The Mentoring System

                  The Mentoring System

The Personalised Mentoring System is the most distinctive means used by PARED Schools to achieve their aims. Families are assigned an individual mentor. The mentor meets regularly with the student, with the student’s teacher, and with the parents. In this way, parents progress in their interviews each term. The mentoring system assists each student’s academic progress and character development. The mentor’s rapport and friendship with the student and family are fundamental to the education process.

In order for the Mentoring System to work effectively, parents are expected to attend formal parent/mentor interviews. Appointments are scheduled every term with the student’s mentor and parents. Both parents are expected to attend interviews. Apart from formal interviews, the mentor is available to talk to the parents whenever necessary.

Mentor availability times for the parent-mentor meeting each term are published on the College website. It is in the interest of parents to book the meeting each term. We suggest a meeting early in the term allows goals to be set for the term.

To further assist parents, the rear of the College Diary has a mentor logto note the date and key focus/goals of mentor sessions. Parents are encouraged to check this regularly and to use this as a vehicle to reinforce mentoring goals/focus with their son.

                  Father and Son Camps

                  Father and Son Camps

Camps are organised by the school once a year for each year group from Years 2-8.

They are held at a camp site booked by the College staff.  These camps are a great opportunity for father and son to enrich their relationship by spending quality time together, and for fathers to observe their son’s interactions with other students.  Fathers also get to know and connect with other dads in the class better and have the opportunity to enhance their parenting by exchanging ideas and listening to talks relevant to their sons’ age group.

The first father and son camps for the year are currently planned to be held on the following dates:

                  Class Parents

                  Class Parents

Class parents are appointed by the College to help foster friendship and unity and healthy engagement among the parents. They inform the class about the upcoming school activities, important news and reminders through a nominated chat platform. They also coordinate support for families when it is needed, such as in the case of illness or upheaval in the family.  Your support and cooperation with class parents is vital to the success of the school. Your son’s class parents will be in contact with you at the beginning of each academic year.

                  Virtues Program

                  Virtues Program

The character development of the students is aided by the practice of virtues which are taught to students as part of the curriculum and should be reinforced at home. Students have a new “motto” every week which revolves around a key virtue.

Parents are asked to encourage their son/s to put the particular virtue into practice at home.

                  IGNITE Program

The Ignite program is part of our virtues and character program at the College. The program is delivered to students in Years 5-10 on a fortnightly basis. Ignite focuses on the development of key skills around wellbeing, leadership, academics and study, practical life skills and service.

                  Parent Involvement

                  Parent Involvement

Some families contribute to the school community by assisting in areas such as fundraising, sport, book covering, working bees and more. Opportunities are advertised in the Newsletter as they arise. The school relies heavily on parental involvement which helps in building the relationship between school and home as well as assisting the school. However, the principal involvement remains being effective parents in the home.

                  House System

                  House System

                  House System

At Wollemi College we have four Houses, with each student being allocated to one of these houses:

                  Araluen Eagles (Gold)

                  Echuca Goanna (Blue)

                  Mundoora Crocs (Green)

                  Wyuna Sharks (Red)

In the secondary school, Houses are comprised of students from Year 7-12 and play an important role in the life of the College. Not only do boys compete in their Houses at a range of school carnivals throughout the year, the House system plays an important role in our pastoral care system. Each House is divided into smaller groups of approximately 18-20 students; together they meet four times a week (Tuesday to Friday) to develop a sense of belonging, understanding of school expectations and to discuss virtues and character.

                  Academic Life

                  Academic Life

                  Academic Life

Academics play an essential role in the overall development of students at Wollemi.

The Primary Leadership Team and Secondary Stage Coordinators hold both academic and pastoral oversight for their respective year groups and should be the primary point of contact for specific academic concerns. They play a critical role in maintaining the academic profile of students, assisting them with elective choices, disseminating academic information relevant to their year groups, and organizing appropriate recognition and encouragement for students in their care.

Working collaboratively with mentors, house patrons, and class teachers, the Primary Leadership Team and Stage Coordinators provide a ‘security net’ to ensure all students demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning and well-being.

The College provides a quality education for all students, including those who are academically gifted or talented so they may be given the opportunity to be extended and enriched. The Honours Program is an enrichment and extension program primarily designed for students who are already excelling in their normal class work. It provides wonderful opportunities for students to take their study to a much higher level, while pursuing an area of personal interest. The program is available in many subjects across Years 7-10, and all students may apply to participate.

As educators, the College's prime concern is to allow students to discover their gifts and develop those gifts into talents. The College acknowledges that there are a wide range of areas of excellence students may exhibit and we strive to assist those who are gifted in different academic domains.

                  UNEXPLAINED ABSENT NOTIFICATION

                  UNEXPLAINED ABSENT NOTIFICATION

The Education Act requires each child of school age to be in school each day that the school is open.

It is a legal requirement that parents inform the school of every student’s absence in writing.

The usual method of notifying the school for student absences is as follows:

If your child is absent from school, sick or has a doctor’s appointment, you are requested to contact the school by 8.40am with this information. This can be done by:

a)Completing the Absentee form via the Parent Portal by 9:30am on the day of the absence. A note explaining the absence should be sent to the child’s teacher, if he is a Primary student, or to the Front Office, if he is a Secondary student, upon the student’s return.

                  UNEXPLAINED ABSENT NOTIFICATION

If the College Office has not received an absence notification from home and your son is marked absent at morning roll call, you will receive an SMS message. This occur at approximately 10.00am, notifying you that his absence or late arrival has been noted. If you receive an absentee SMS, but your son is supposed to be at school (i.e. your son is not sick, and you expect him to be at school) please contact the College Front Office.

Please notify the school immediately if these SMS notifications are to go to a different number.

It is a legal expectation that parents notify the School of the reason for their son’s absence within 7 days of the absence.

Parents are asked to sign the diary each week in the space provided in the diary. Every student is expected to have his diary at each lesson. House patrons and mentors inspect diaries as a matter of routine during their regular meetings. At the rear of the College Diary there is also a mentor log to note the date and key focus/goals of mentor sessions. Parents are encouraged to check this regular and to use this as vehicle to reinforce mentoring goals/focus with their son.

Homeworkis to be recorded in the Diary. The ten-day cycle and general timetabling information, important school rules and procedures and advice on study skills and wellbeing strategies are all contained within the diary.

                  Parental Code of Conduct

                  Parental Code of Conduct

The School aims to work in partnership with parents to form each child's character, educating for personal and academic excellence. The School is committed to a strong culture of mutual trust and support among parents, teachers, tutors, all staff members, and students.

This Code has been developed so that parents and those with parental responsibilities are aware of and meet the School's expectations with regard to their interaction with the School, its teachers, mentors and all staff members, other parents and students. Adherence to this Code is important to promote positive and productive relationships within the School community.

                  Role of the School Generally

The School is responsible for establishing and administering the policies, procedures and rules which govern the day-to-day operations of the school. It is important that parents recognise and respect this, adhere and have their children adhere to the School's requirements, and support these decisions.

                  Discipline

The School expects students to comply with its rules and not engage in behaviour which is harmful to others or is contrary to the ethos and philosophy of the School. Parents are expected to support the School in relation to its discipline policy and not do anything which undermines its authority. It must be understood that in the case of minor disciplinary matters, the School will be the arbiter of what took place and what is a fair punishment - it will not engage in debate about the details of the conduct for the appropriateness of the punishment.

In relation to more disciplinary matters which may result in suspension or expulsion the School will inform parents of the matter and will deal with it in accordance with the School's disciplinary policy. While parents will be consulted, the final decision will be the School's.

                  Interaction with Staff

The School conducts regular meetings between staff and parents at which the student's progress can be discussed. There may be other times when a parent or staff member requests a meeting to discuss particular issues that may arise during the course of a student's schooling.

If a parent wishes to meet with a staff member, they should make an appointment so that a mutually convenient time can be arranged. This can be done through the school office, or by emailing the staff member.

Parents should never attempt to contact a staff member at their home unless the staff member requests this.

Parents also can make an appointment to see the Principal about any particular concerns they may have relating to their son.

It is important that parents show respect for staff and not publically criticise them or seek to undermine their authority. If a parent has a particular concern about a member of staff, they can raise it with the staff member concerned or with the Headmaster. However, when doing so, they should observe the general rules of conduct set out in this Code.

The School has a duty of care to protect all staff and for this reason, any aggressive or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated.

                  Complaints

If a parent has a complaint about an issue, this should be directed to the Principal or to the teacher responsible for the particular area of activity.

If a parent wishes to make a complaint, they should not use rude or abusive language. This is not productive and can make it harder to resolve concerns.

                  Interactions Generally

Communications whether verbal or in writing with other members of the school community, whether teachers, administration staff, other parents or students should:

                  • show respect, courtesy and consideration;

                  • not harass or bully another person;

                  • not use intemperate language; and

                  • not be confrontational.

Social media should not be used to criticise or denigrate others in the school community.

                  Sport

Parents are welcome to attend sporting events, but should exercise restraint when supporting school teams. In particular, this should not abuse, threaten or otherwise seek to intimidate an umpire or referee or be directed against a player, or any School representatives.

The Sports coaches at the School, pick teams based on their view of the most appropriate selection at the relevant time. It is not appropriate for parents to complain about the failure of their son or daughter to be picked for a particular team.

                  Separated Parents

Where students have parents who are separated or divorced, parents should not attempt to involve the School in any parental dispute that may arise. The School is not able to make judgments on the merits of claims made by one parent against another and should not be asked to do so. Nor should it be asked to take any action, which would or is designed to disadvantage one party. The School will of course, observe any orders made by a Court in relation to a student or communications with parents.

                  Failure to Observe this Code

If a parent fails to observe this Code after being warned about a breach, the School may:

                  • limit access to a teacher or teachers;

                  • limit access to the school premises or sporting or other school events; or

                  • terminate the enrolment of the student.
