From the Headmaster

Over the past week, students from Years 7 to 10 have completed Mid-year exams, and Year 11 and 12 students are continuing to work through their assessment tasks. These challenges - consistent study, careful revision, and managing nerves are more than academic; they are opportunities to grow in virtue. Students develop habits that build character and prepare them for life’s greater challenges by approaching their work with perseverance, responsibility, and integrity.
As the term comes to a close, Semester 1 Academic Reports are being prepared. Parents should always guide students' interpretation of results. It’s important to focus on effort rather than just marks. Each result offers a chance to reflect, learn, and set meaningful goals for next semester. Mentors play a key role in supporting students and working with parents to guide their continued growth and success. If you haven’t yet made time to meet with your child’s mentor this term, there is still a little time to do so.
As many of you have heard, at the end of this term, we farewell Mrs Camille Wiggins, our PA to the Headmaster and Office Manager, whose family is relocating interstate. Camille’s involvement with Wollemi began very early in the life of the school. She is the mother of 5 graduates, including our 2024 Captain, as well as one current Wollemi and two Montgrove students. Camille and Michael have played a pivotal role as long-time class parents in building this community that today we consider one of our greatest assets. As a member of staff, Camille has managed the College Office and assisted the previous Headmaster as well as me with great skill and dedication, as well as creativity, warmth and good humour. I have, at every Presentation Day, said that the College Office is the heart of the school, and Camille has done an outstanding job leading it, on occasions at significant personal cost. We collectively, and I personally, thank Camille for her role as both staff member and parent, and wish her all the best on her adventure ‘out West’.
I look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow at our Eucharistic Procession, just before the feast of Corpus Christi on Sunday. We have had a number of rehearsals this week, and I know our Year 12s are eager for their chance to lead the school in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. I also hope to see many of our dads on Friday at Dads' Night, 6 pm here at Wollemi.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the death of St Josemaria. As you know, St Josemaria was the founder of Opus Dei, and during his lifetime, he encouraged parents to start schools like the Pared schools in Spain. These schools recognised the importance of the parents’ role as the first educators of their children, and focused on forming a partnership between the home and the school as a way to encourage character growth and excellence. This year, there are two Masses being held in honour of St Josemaria – one in St Mary’s Cathedral on 23 June, and one at St Nicholas of Myra (Penrith) on 26 June. Details can be found here.
Finally, I hope all our students and families will have a restful mid-year break. St Josemaria used to say that to rest does not mean to do nothing, but rather to change occupations. Weather permitting, I recommend that our students spend as much time as possible outdoors and away from screens. That way, they will come back after the holidays refreshed and ready to redouble their efforts for the second semester.

Year 11 Agriculture Plot Project

In the early weeks of Term 1, I was approached by the Year 11 Student Representative Council with a proposal: to Make Wollemi’s Agricultural Plot Great Again (I have used poetic license here)! To call the proposal detailed and well-planned would be an understatement. The document included timelines, job specifications, tools required, a breakdown of manpower, and a committee structure with job descriptions for each area manager and much more. It even featured a Risk Management Matrix and a projected visualisation of the final outcome.
With the support of their class teacher, Mr Garziniti, the Year 11 farm crew is well on their way to bringing this proposal to life. So far, they have removed overgrown weeds, grasses, and roots; dug out the old vegetable bed timbers; turned the soil; cleaned out the existing chicken coop; and salvaged usable parts of the greenhouse. With so much done thus far, they are only at phase two of a six-phase process - more great work to come!
All of this has been achieved during several admin periods and the students' own recess and lunch breaks. Mr Garziniti has spoken highly of the collective effort and teamwork the boys have shown, particularly during the most laborious stages. Their enthusiasm and dedication are truly inspiring, and I look forward to seeing - and hopefully tasting - the final product. While the planting is still to come, several chickens are already thriving in the freshly restored coop.
A special mention must go to Thomas G, who has been the driving force behind this initiative, leading his peers with respect and by example. A big thank you also to Mr Garziniti, whose hands-on support and supervision have helped turn this vision into a reality.
Positive Feedback
Earlier this week, the College received an email from a commuter on the Mountains train line, which many of our students use to travel to and from school. At around 4:00 pm, he noticed a group of Wollemi students engaged in animated conversation.
He overheard some of the secondary boys discussing their Spanish class, while a few primary students talked about their band instruments. He was struck by their enthusiasm, respectful tone, and, most notably, the pride they showed in their appearance. Despite the time of day, blazers were on, shirts tucked in, and ties done up properly.
As teachers, we often feel like broken records, constantly reminding students to fix their uniforms. I’m certainly one of them! But moments like this, when a member of the public takes the time to share such positive feedback, make all those reminders worth it.

Year 4 Zoosnooz
Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Zoosnooz overnight excursion to Taronga Zoo with our lovely Year 4 students. The Zoosnooz gave the boys the chance to tour the zoo at night, seeing lions, koalas and fennec foxes in their waking moments. The boys also experienced numerous animal encounters, where they saw a children’s python and shingleback lizard and watched the amazing tawny frogmouth in full flight. Our future zoologists participated in an amazing wildlife experience where they entered a modified habitat filled with birds, frogs and potoroos. The boys also toured the zoo during the day, taking in the amazing seal show, bird show and marvelling at the numerous exhibits around the zoo.
The excursion was a wonderful success with our students being commended for their great enthusiasm, interesting insights and positive behaviour throughout the camp. It was the first night away from home for many of the boys, but it was lovely to see them supporting one another and enjoying their time! A huge thanks to our Wollemi staff - Mr Reyes, Mr Younes, Mr Lay, Mr Lockley - and amazing dads - Mr Joseph, Mr Victorino, Mr Roberts - for their attendance and support. It was a memorable experience for all involved!
Term 2 STEM Challenge
This week, we launch our Term 2 STEM challenge - Fly The Plane.
Fly The Plane is an opportunity for all Primary students to challenge themselves to design and make a paper plane that can fly the longest distance.
This challenge will have 3 divisions - Year 2, Year 3-4 and Year 5-6 and 2 categories - Original and Modified.
Students will compete in their divisions and can enter a plane into one or both categories. Students are limited to 1 plane entry in each category and must be ready to test their designs on Thursday, 26th or Friday, 27th of June.
Guidelines:
Original: Must be made with 1 single A4 piece of paper (no other modifications or additions can be added).
Modified: Must be made from paper or cardboard - may have modifications (weights, tape, additional paper etc) but must not measure more than 50cm (length or width).
Semester 1 Reports
Your son’s Semester 1 Academic Report will be available on the parent portal at the conclusion of Term 2 (Friday, 27 June). The academic report provides student feedback on achievement and application across all key learning areas. I encourage parents to talk with their son/s about their reports and to consider what goals can be set for Semester 2. We do not have parent-teacher conferences, but please feel free to contact your son’s teacher and mentor if you would like further information and/or clarification about your son’s report.
Book and Lego Drive 2025
A reminder about our ongoing Book and Lego Drive. We are calling out for all of the “well-read” books that you would be happy to donate to the College, suited to students from ages 6-12. We are looking to increase the quality of our class libraries across Primary, giving the boys a wider selection of books to read within their classroom.
We are also asking for any donations of LEGO, which have sat idle in rooms and garages. The Wollemi College Lunchtime LEGO Club will launch in Term 3, and we are looking to renew and grow our LEGO collection.
Any donations will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be brought into school by your son to his class teacher throughout the last week and a half of term. Our strong and trusting Year 6s will then collect and redistribute the books and LEGO to their new classroom homes.

Captain's Corner

We're approaching the end of another term. Don't slow down! Don't stop! You may not feel like studying but you can do many other things. Learn a new skill, language, hobby. Spend some time with your family. Learn a skill: to say NO to yourself.
We live in a society where people only ever say YES to themselves. They say yes to themselves and give themselves whatever they want. When they want a snack, when they want their phone, when they want to watch youtube, they say yes to themselves. They can't deny themselves anything. We NEED to learn how to say no.
There is a popular game called Monopoly Deal, a card game version of the monopoly board game. In the game, players can steal properties or trade properties, but there is one very powerful card that can stop anything. The card is called "Just Say No".
In life, we really need to learn to Just Say No to ourselves because if we always say yes to ourselves we are going to suffer. Saying no to something is actually saying yes to many other things. It is saying yes to growing in patience and fortitude. So many times in life you are going to have to say no to your own desires. Learn the skill now so that it is easier in the future. Real men can say no to themselves. They can say no because its best for themselves or their families.
Ask yourself, can I say no to myself? Or do I not have enough control of my life that I can't?
Can I go a day without my phone? Can I say no to myself and not get fast food for one week? Am I strong enough to say NO?

Sydney Water’s Walter Smart and Friends Visit Wollemi!
In Week 8, Year 2-6 students at Wollemi College were treated to an engaging and educational experience during the Walter Smart and Friends incursion, hosted in partnership with Sydney Water. The theatrical and interactive performance had students laughing, dancing, and learning as the energetic cast brought important water-saving messages to life.
Through a clever mix of music, storytelling, and audience participation, Walter Smart and his friends taught students practical ways to conserve water at home and school. From shorter showers to turning taps off while brushing teeth, students were reminded that every drop counts—and that even small changes can make a big difference.
The performance entertained and empowered our students to become responsible water users. We hope many students left the session eager to share what they’d learned with their families and start implementing water-wise habits immediately.
As we continue to raise awareness about water conservation, we’re excited to promote the upcoming Water Night challenge on Thursday, October 23rd this year! Families are encouraged to join this national initiative by going for one night without using taps, showers, or running water between 5 pm and 10 pm. It’s a powerful way to reflect on how often we reach for the tap without thinking—and a fun challenge to do together as a family.
Let’s all do our part to be Water Smart!

Olympian Inspires Year 9 Students

Year 9 students were fortunate to welcome Winter Olympian Nick Timmings during a recent PDHPE lesson. Nick, who competed in the high-speed sport of Skeleton at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, shared his journey as part of the Olympics Unleashed program.
He spoke about the importance of resilience, goal-setting, and pushing through challenges—offering students a valuable insight into the mindset of an elite athlete.
We thank Nick for generously giving up his time and wish him all the best as he aims to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
Stand Tall Conference
In the middle of exam week, Year 9 left for the Stand Tall Conference in the ICC. We’d just had two days of exams, including a hectic Wednesday that had us go through three exams for the first time in (most of) our lives. We were tired, stressed, and wondering why on earth we were sent to the city in between what had proven to be a taxing Mid-Year period.
In the end, though, I can say that many of us, if not all of us, felt that the experience during the Stand Tall Conference was worth it. In a room with over five thousand people, shining neon lights, and a live band, we watched numerous musical performances, but most importantly, speeches from people talking to us about their experience.
My personal favourite was delivered by Michael Crossland, a man who had suffered from a debilitating cancer as a child. He overcame constant surgeries, struggles, and a treatment that killed everyone but himself, transforming his suffering into fuel to help others, including creating an orphanage in the war-torn country of Haiti. However, there was one key theme to every speaker who had come on stage. Perseverance. The ability to suffer the greatest blows and come back, knowing that it didn’t matter the reason for a fall, only the ability to get back up again. These inspiring people had endured every pain and suffering, persevering through it all, and I think that was the exact lesson that made the Stand Tall conference important for us to see, even during exam week. Their message, to every person going through a rough patch in their lives, I think, should be told: “this too shall pass.”

2025 Wollemi Eucharistic Procession
You are cordially invited to our 2025 Wollemi Eucharistic Procession, which will take place on Thursday, June 19, from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m.
The Feast of Corpus Christi, also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, which falls this year on Thursday, 19 June, celebrates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. St John Paul II in Ecclesia de Eucharistia wrote that “the worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass is of inestimable value for the life of the Church.” For this reason, at Wollemi, we would like to teach all our students the immense value of Eucharistic Adoration by having a short procession around the school grounds.
The Corpus Christi procession is an old tradition of the Catholic faith to confess the Real Presence of Jesus — the Eucharist — in public. It is a special occasion to pray together, with parents, staff, and students, before the Blessed Sacrament. Our Year 12 students and many other boys will be helping out and contributing to this special occasion in some way.
We invite students who have just made (in 2025) or will make their First Holy Communion in 2025 to join us at Wollemi for our Eucharistic Procession on Thursday, 19 June. The first communicants will wear a white sash provided by the school on top of their full winter school uniform.
Students participating will attend the rehearsal on the morning of the procession day. If your son would like to join the Procession, kindly complete this form.

2025 Term Dates
School Times
The school gates will open at 8:15 a.m., and students are not allowed onto the school premises before this time unless they have co-curricular commitments. If you are dropping your child/children off before 8:15 a.m., please remind them that they are to stay outside the gates until they are opened.
A reminder that when collecting your child/ren, parents can either:
Park their car in the outside car park and walk into the school/pedestrian gate to pick up their child
Use the car line process where your child will come to the car.
To help with the flow of the carline and traffic in the area, we kindly ask that:
If you are using the car line, we ask parents not to exit the car.
Please collect your child/children between 3.25 pm and 3.45 pm when Teacher supervision ends.
This is a reminder to parents NOT to park along Gipps Rd in the afternoon, as it causes congestion and risks the safety of our students.
Car Line Pick-up
The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount importance at Wollemi. As you would appreciate, with the commencement of a new school term, and the continued growth of the school population, the volume of traffic in and around the College has increased during afternoon pick-up. As a result of this, we have taken some measures to improve the parking at the College with the expansion of the overflow car park. To help ensure the effective traffic flow and our Wollemi community's safety, I take this opportunity to remind you of the College’s pick-up procedures.
Main Carpark (inside the College)
1. Entry into the school is via the second gate only.
2. Students are only to be collected in the green pick-up area (see diagram above)
3. The curb by the buildings is set down and pick up only (noted in green) – no parking. Do not alight from the right-hand side of cars in the set-down lane. Please be especially vigilant that children ONLY alight on the left.
4. Please do not double park in the set-down lane; instead, wait for space to become available on the curb.
5. Please remain in your vehicle until your son arrives.
6. When waiting in the carline to collect your son/son, please move to the front of the line or fill any empty space available along the pickup area to ensure traffic flow and maximise space.
Please watch for young students crossing on the pedestrian crossing from the school veranda entrance to the carpark.
Overflow car park (outside the school)
7. Students are only to be collected in the green pickup area (see diagram above)
8. Please Park only in the designated parking bays - as noted in yellow on the diagram
IMPORTANT NOTES
Please ensure your son knows which carpark he will be picked up from in the afternoon.
To further assist with traffic flow and reduce parent wait time in the car line, please remind your sons that they must be watchful for the approach of your vehicle on Gipps Rd so that they can be ready for collection.
We hope these measures will help improve traffic flow within the College, reduce congestion, and ensure student safety. We appreciate that the afternoon pickup period can be busy, and we ask that we continue to be patient and courteous to each other.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Opens Futsal School Championships
In Week 7, the Opens Wollemi Futsal Team competed in the Futsal NSW Penrith Region Schools Championships.
The team went undefeated through the round games winning games against St Bishoy (6-1), Mitchell HS (3-2), St Paul's (2-0) and Pacific Hills (3-1).
This meant we topped our group and had a Quarter Final showdown with Cabramatta.
The boys made light work of Cabramatta, running out 5-2 winners and setting up a rematch with Mitchell HS in the Semi Final.
Having been pushed to our limits against Mitchell HS in the group game, the boys knew this was not going to be easy.
The 3-0 win in the Semi Final was a testament to how the boys were playing and knew they could not take any opposition lightly.
This win guaranteed us a meeting with Mamre Anglican in the Grand Final.
We came runners up in a 6-5 defeat to an unbelievable Mamre Anglican side.
It was an incredible game that went goal-for-goal for the most part until a couple of lucky goals from Mamre and a couple of unlucky shots hit the post for us. It just wasn't meant to be.
Mamre run their own elite soccer program at their school, so to go toe-to-toe with them was an outstanding effort.
I awarded Gabriel Vulcik man of the tournament. He was an absolute workhorse all day.
We may still get a wildcard into State Championships next term so watch this space!
