From the Headmaster

A big thank you to our Years 5 and 6 dads and our Years 3 and 4 mums who attended their respective Talking About Love sessions on Friday, 9 May and Saturday, 17 May, respectively. Both KPF workshops were extremely well received by participants, as they provided very practical advice and facilitated unique opportunities that are sure to bear much fruit in the future. For the rest of the parents, in Year 2 and Secondary, we look forward to seeing you next Wednesday, 28 May, at our Term 2 KPF.
Thank you to all the mums who attended the special Mass and Morning Tea for Wollemi Mother’s Day. We had record numbers in attendance, and it gave the boys a wonderful opportunity to pray with their mums and also to thank them as a school for everything they do.

Over the next two weeks, we will have our traditional May pilgrimages so that we can all thank our Mother Mary for all she does for us. Secondary boys will have theirs this Friday, 23 May, while Primary boys will go on Friday, 30 May. On Sunday, 25 May, we will have our now traditional Pilgrimage Day for Wollemi Families, beginning with Holy Mass at 11 a.m. It will be our first in the now fully completed Wollemi Shrine. We hope you can make it.
Last Friday, I attended the funeral of John Faehrmann, who passed away on 27 April. John was part of the original group of parents who first started PARED and served as the founding Chairman of Pared’s Board. With more than 30 years of experience as a teacher and headmaster, John provided invaluable support and guidance to countless families, teachers and school leaders. May he rest in peace.
A heartfelt thank you to all those who helped out or attended, in person or remotely, Jamie Dowsett's funeral on Monday. Bianca and the entire family were most appreciative of the prayers and support offered. Please continue to pray for Jamie’s eternal repose and Bianca and the boys as they move forward. I know she can count on all our support.
We are, as a school and a community, keeping a close eye on students’ health and well-being as they process what has taken place in their own way. The following resources could help our parents guide their sons in this process:

Living a Life of Service – A Reflection for Fathers

On Monday, I attended, along with many families of the Wollemi community, the funeral of Jamie Dowsett—a beloved husband to Bianca and father of four amazing young boys. In what is an unimaginably difficult time for the family, Mrs Dowsett’s courage and strength in delivering her heartfelt eulogy were truly remarkable.
While I did not know Mr Dowsett as well as many in our community, Mrs Dowsett’s words gave me a deep insight into the man he was—a man of profound faith and unwavering commitment to his family.
Mrs Dowsett spoke of the strong connection he shared with his four sons and the quality time he made sure to spend with each of them, both individually and as a family. Her words prompted me to reflect on my own role as a husband and father. I’d like to share a few reminders with all Wollemi dads about the important part we play in forming our children into young men and women who live lives of service and think outwardly.
Below are some practical ideas to consider. They are not shared from a place of expertise or perfection, but rather as reminders that I, too, need to strive to be a better father and husband.
Be the First to Serve
Small acts of service—whether at home or when you are out with your family—are powerful examples for your children. Children imitate what they see. Work as a team with your wife on household chores. Help your neighbour. Offer assistance to the elderly at the shops. The opportunities are endless. The key: do so cheerfully, and without complaint.
Make Service a Shared Mission
When a father involves his children in practical, meaningful work for others, he teaches them to see service not as an obligation, but as an adventure. Volunteer at Vinnies. Pick up rubbish at your local parish. Visit a nursing home. Service can be a mission that bonds you as a family.
Teach Them to Notice Needs
Ask reflective questions: “Did you see that boy sitting alone at lunch?” or “That man at Mass looked like he needed a hand—what could we have done?” You are helping your children develop eyes and hearts that are alert to the needs of others—an essential foundation for leadership and compassion.
Make Giving Personal
If your family donates to a charity, involve your children in the process. Let them research, choose a cause, or contribute from their own savings. This helps them understand that giving is not just about money - it is about ownership and intention.
Model Love for Mum
Especially for boys, they must see their father prioritising their mother: taking time to talk to her, doing small things for her without fanfare, and speaking to her with kindness and respect. Your example sets the standard for how they will treat others in the future.
Frame Service as a Rite of Passage
Help your children understand that service isn’t something extra we do when we have spare time; it’s at the heart of living out our values and faith. True maturity comes when we learn to live for others.
Please know that I share these thoughts not as someone who implements them perfectly, but as someone who needs reminding of them just as much as anyone else. I hope you find these ideas helpful and practical as we each try to grow in our vocation as fathers.

From the Chaplain

Habemus Papam!! The whole world was very happy to listen to these Latin words on the 8th of May! We were all sleeping here in Australia… but what a joy when we woke up! Pope Leo XIV is now our Shepherd, is now Peter.
In his homily during the Mass for the beginning of his Pontificate, the Holy Father explained his goal: “We want to say to the world, with humility and joy: Look to Christ! Come closer to him! Welcome his word that enlightens and consoles! Listen to his offer of love and become his one family: in the one Christ, we are one”.
Let’s support our new Pope with our prayers. Since Easter Monday, we have been remembering Pope Francis's legacy and experiencing how the Catholic Church is a big family, following his funeral and burial. Our minds and our hearts have been in the Sistine Chapel with all the cardinals, witnessing the action of the Holy Spirit.
And during the last days, we have learned many details about Pope Leo’s life and his missionary work in Peru. In one month, all our students and their families, the whole world, have been growing in their love for the Pope!
As St. Josemaria explained in the homily “In Love for the Church”, “love for the Roman Pontiff must be in us a delightful passion, for in him we see Christ”.
Fr Felix, Chaplain

The month of May has been full of activity for boys across Primary with a wide range of activities allowing boys to experience new places and develop their social and life skills.
Year 2 headed off to Elizabeth Farm for a hands-on excursion, learning about how people lived in the past. Year 5 journeyed into Sydney City for a walking tour of The Rocks - developing their understanding of life in Australia for early European convicts and migrants. It was heartening to receive a very complimentary email from the organisation who worked with our Year 5 students which finished with some great praise - “it’s schools like yours that make our work so rewarding”. Well done to Mr Attia, Mr Uyeda and our wonderful Year 5 students.
Week 2 is also the first round of our inter-school Chess competition. We had 8 Primary teams compete with many positive results - best of all was witnessing them welcome our visiting schools with enthusiasm and great sportsmanship.
Last week, I observed a wide range of sports and activities being played at lunchtime. We had a huge game of Year 3 soccer on the mini oval, Year 2 students playing a very competitive game of touch football, Year 6 students developing their skills with volleyball and challenging one another with small-sided basketball games. Year 4 students were seen playing a tense game of handball, shooting on the basketball hoop and playing cricket. There were also more than 20 Year 5 students playing a huge game of touch football whilst others challenged each other to a game of “roll ball” (a game developed by some very creative Year 5s). There were also various board games, games of chess, drawing challenges, and creative play activities around the primary playground. It is great to see so many boys engaging in meaningful play.
These activities, coupled with our lunchtime clubs - coding, chess and rugby - provide so many chances for the boys to develop valuable skills and capabilities.
STEAM focus for Term 2
In the coming weeks, we will be launching a number of activities/clubs which target our students’ scientific and design and make skills. Keep an eye out for further information in the next newsletter. In the meantime I encourage the boys to practice making paper planes and honing their LEGO skills - these abilities will come in handy in the coming weeks!
Lastly, I echo the words of Mr Williamson in offering my deepest condolences to the Dowsett family and offer wholeheartedly all of my support to Bianca and the boys. It was amazing to witness Bianca’s strength and love on Monday. The uplifting service provided all in attendance the opportunity to reflect on and remember Jamie’s amazing and fruitful life.

Captain's Corner

We are now in the second half of the year, approaching the downward slope to our finish line. It is so easy to take your foot off the gas and develop bad habits at this time. We may be tired and not feel like doing any work. This is your time! Now is your chance to get ahead, to build good habits, and to go hard!
We are men. Called to be men. Made to be men. Men are strong, courageous and strive to be the best version of themselves that they can be. The perfect example of the strongest, most courageous man is Jesus in the desert. Imagine walking in 38 degrees, in a never-ending desert. You have not eaten in forty days. Your stomach has been grumbling and groaning, crying for food. Someone offers you a piece of soft, warm bread. Only the strongest, bravest, most hardcore man could refuse. We are made to be men who can say no to themself. Men try to be Christ-like.
Real men strive to be the best version of themselves that they can, to be better every day. To improve every day. 1.01 to the power of 365 is 38. If you improve by 1% for 365 days you will have improved by 38% by the end of the year!
You don’t need to do something big! You don't need a massive transformation! Be better by only 1% every day! That’s what a man is!
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle

Premier's Reading Challenge - Term 2 Update
Congratulations to the students who have already completed the Challenge.
Year 2 Elizabeth Farm & Hambledon Cottage Excursion
In Week 3, Year 2 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Elizabeth Farm and Hambledon Cottage as part of their History unit, exploring the differences between life in the past and life today. With great curiosity and enthusiasm, students stepped into the shoes of history detectives, uncovering clues about how families lived long ago.
At Elizabeth Farm, students discovered what life was like for John and Elizabeth Macarthur, pioneers of early colonial Australia. They explored rooms filled with objects from the 1800s, asked thoughtful questions, and compared the home to their own lives today. From candlelit rooms to antique furnishings, servants' quarters to strange lounge rooms, it was a real step back in time.
One of the highlights was trying out games from the past. With no technology in sight, students enjoyed old-fashioned fun – spinning hoops, quoits, and cup-and-ball challenges brought big smiles and laughter all around.
After a short walk through suburban Parramatta, including passing the beautiful Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral, students arrived at Hambledon Cottage. This house museum, one of the oldest surviving homes in Australia, offered another opportunity to examine how different everyday life used to be. From the kitchen to the bedroom, students noticed how tools, clothes, and routines have changed over time.
We extend a big thank you to all the parent helpers who joined us on the day. Your support helped make the excursion a memorable and successful learning experience for all involved.
Nathan Quan, Year 2B Teacher
Les Misérables Musical
Seeing Les Misérables at the ICC Sydney was an unforgettable experience. Wollemi students from the drama, music, and art electives participated in this excursion. As a Year 10 student on an excursion, I was excited but unsure of what to expect, as the only play I had previously been to was a school one. From the moment the show started, I was captivated by the powerful music and stunning performances, particularly with how well the music performed and created an atmosphere for the actors to utilise, whether it be sad, happy or even funny. The emotional depth of the characters made me feel connected to their struggles and triumphs.
The performances were incredible. Their voices filled the arena, and I could feel the stage’s atmosphere shift with each song. I was surprised by how much I felt for the characters, especially during the heartbreaking moments, particularly when many of the men died during their battle.
Les Misérables taught me about how powerful a story can be without special effects but with just the use of music. Each song served as a vehicle for the characters' and audience to connect with their journeys on a personal level.
Alexander Vimalraj, Year 10
Year 11 WSU Solar Car Experience

Year 11 students recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Western Sydney University’s Kingswood campus for an exclusive look at their cutting-edge Solar Car exhibit. This immersive experience offered a rare glimpse into the world of advanced engineering and sustainable innovation.
Although much of the project remains confidential, meaning no photos were allowed, students were captivated by the behind-the-scenes work of the university’s engineering team as they prepared for the 2025 Solar Car Challenge, a prestigious international competition. The team shared insights into how evolving rules have influenced their design process, and students witnessed firsthand the complexity and creativity involved in building a solar-powered vehicle from the ground up.
A highlight of the visit was hearing from Brendan, a proud Redfield Old Boy and current WSU representative, who generously shared his journey studying design and technology. His insights sparked thoughtful questions from our students, who were eager to learn more about the challenges and rewards of engineering innovation.
Throughout the excursion, the boys demonstrated curiosity, respect, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning, upholding the values of Wollemi College with distinction. It was a day filled with inspiration, real-world knowledge, and a deeper appreciation for the possibilities of science and technology.

Year 11 Business Studies Presentation
On Thursday 8th May, Mr & Mrs Said and Clarissa Azizi - Wollemi parents and small business owners - came in to talk to our Year 11 Business Studies classes.
They gave an excellent presentation that provided our boys with a great insight into the world of Home Care, through the lens of their own business' life cycle. They really illustrated and brought to life many of the concepts taught in the Business Studies course, including the complexities of legal compliance, how much money is really needed to get a business up and running, the ways of developing management skills, the hidden costs that need to be considered when paying employees, the many risks involved in the whole process and many more.
We would like to sincerely thank Mr & Mrs Azizi for giving up their time to come in and give this opportunity to our Business Studies students.

2025 Wollemi Eucharistic Procession
You are cordially invited to our 2025 Wollemi Eucharistic Procession, which will take place on Thursday, June 19, from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m.
The Feast of Corpus Christi, also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, which falls this year on Thursday, 19 June, celebrates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. St John Paul II in Ecclesia de Eucharistia wrote that “the worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass is of inestimable value for the life of the Church.” For this reason, at Wollemi, we would like to teach all our students the immense value of Eucharistic Adoration by having a short procession around the school grounds.
The Corpus Christi procession is an old tradition of the Catholic faith to confess the Real Presence of Jesus — the Eucharist — in public. It is a special occasion to pray together, with parents, staff, and students, before the Blessed Sacrament. Our Year 12 students and many other boys will be helping out and contributing to this special occasion in some way.
We invite students who have just made (in 2025) or will make their First Holy Communion in 2025 to join us at Wollemi for our Eucharistic Procession on Thursday, 19 June. The first communicants will wear a white sash provided by the school on top of their full winter school uniform.
Students participating will attend the rehearsal on the morning of the procession day. If your son would like to join the Procession, kindly complete this form.

2025 Term Dates
School Times
The school gates will open at 8:15 a.m., and students are not allowed onto the school premises before this time unless they have co-curricular commitments. If you are dropping your child/children off before 8:15 a.m., please remind them that they are to stay outside the gates until they are opened.
A reminder that when collecting your child/ren, parents can either:
Park their car in the outside car park and walk into the school/pedestrian gate to pick up their child
Use the car line process where your child will come to the car.
To help with the flow of the carline and traffic in the area, we kindly ask that:
If you are using the car line, we ask parents not to exit the car.
Please collect your child/children between 3.25 pm and 3.45 pm when Teacher supervision ends.
This is a reminder to parents NOT to park along Gipps Rd in the afternoon, as it causes congestion and risks the safety of our students.
Car Line Pick-up
The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount importance at Wollemi. As you would appreciate, with the commencement of a new school term, and the continued growth of the school population, the volume of traffic in and around the College has increased during afternoon pick-up. As a result of this, we have taken some measures to improve the parking at the College with the expansion of the overflow car park. To help ensure the effective traffic flow and our Wollemi community's safety, I take this opportunity to remind you of the College’s pick-up procedures.
Main Carpark (inside the College)
1. Entry into the school is via the second gate only.
2. Students are only to be collected in the green pick-up area (see diagram above)
3. The curb by the buildings is set down and pick up only (noted in green) – no parking. Do not alight from the right-hand side of cars in the set-down lane. Please be especially vigilant that children ONLY alight on the left.
4. Please do not double park in the set-down lane; instead, wait for space to become available on the curb.
5. Please remain in your vehicle until your son arrives.
6. When waiting in the carline to collect your son/son, please move to the front of the line or fill any empty space available along the pickup area to ensure traffic flow and maximise space.
Please watch for young students crossing on the pedestrian crossing from the school veranda entrance to the carpark.
Overflow car park (outside the school)
7. Students are only to be collected in the green pickup area (see diagram above)
8. Please Park only in the designated parking bays - as noted in yellow on the diagram
IMPORTANT NOTES
Please ensure your son knows which carpark he will be picked up from in the afternoon.
To further assist with traffic flow and reduce parent wait time in the car line, please remind your sons that they must be watchful for the approach of your vehicle on Gipps Rd so that they can be ready for collection.
We hope these measures will help improve traffic flow within the College, reduce congestion, and ensure student safety. We appreciate that the afternoon pickup period can be busy, and we ask that we continue to be patient and courteous to each other.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

North Sydney Primary Rugby 7’s Gala Day

Mr Williamson and myself took a Year 3/4 team and a Year 5/6 team to the North Sydney Primary rugby 7’s gala day, where we competed against some of the best teams that Sydney has to offer!
Our Year 3/4 team went 3-1 and placed 3rd overall. Our only loss came from the reigning state champions and eventual tournament winners Narraweena.
Our Year 5/6 team went 2-2, narrowly missing out on the 3rd place game. One loss was a very close game to Sydney Grammar, which could have easily gone our way. Another came from the defending state champions and eventual tournament winners Narraweena.
It was great to see how we stack up against the best of the best and encouraging to know that we were able to give the champs a very tough game.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our rugby program here at Wollemi College!
