From the Headmaster

It has been quite an eventful term, with many ups and downs, that now draws to a close. First and foremost, we keep in our thoughts and prayers the Year 12 cohort at Montgrove, the staff, students and parents who are currently navigating such a difficult situation.
It has been a flurry of activity on the academic front, with Year 12 Mid-year Exams last week and NAPLAN for years 3, 5, 7 and 9 during the two weeks prior. Many assessments have also been completed over the last fortnight, and we hope the bulk of our students have earned themselves a restful break.
Last weekend, we had the Year 5 Father & Son camp at Blue Gum Lodge in Springwood. This was our fourth camp of the term, following Years 7, 3 and 2. A huge thank you to the Formation team, led by Mr Johnson, and especially to Mrs Reid for the admin support and Mr Breen for all the late nights on site. These are wonderful opportunities to deepen the relationships between fathers and sons, as well as among fathers. They are also something the boys will remember for a long time to come. A big thank you, therefore, to all the dads who gave up their weekend and to all the mums who allowed them to come!
It is relatively unusual for our school holidays to begin before Palm Sunday. This year, we will have a unique opportunity to live Holy Week during the first week of the break. After the various efforts of Lent, in preparation for Easter, we have an opportunity to accompany Jesus more closely during this ‘holiday’ Holy Week. I hope we can all feel very united with those of our families who have experienced the Cross in a particular way this Lent - such as the Roberts, the Tudehope and the Santiago and Javier families. We pray that the joy and blessings of Easter will come to them in a special way.
Several events will arrive soon after the holidays end and are worth mentioning now. Firstly, Term 2 kicks off with a Parent Teacher Day on Monday, 28 April. Please book your slots for those very informative meetings with your son(s) teachers. Soon after that, we will host two special KPFs around the program Talking About Love, aimed at helping parents communicate with their children about sexuality, tailored to the child's age and maturity, and fostering stronger parent- child relationships. There will be two sessions, one for Dads and Sons in Years 5 & 6 on Friday, 9 May and another for Mums and Sons in Years 3 & 4 on Saturday, 17 May. Unfortunately, places are limited, so I encourage you to book now.
Wishing all our Wollemi families a Blessed Easter and a restful holiday.

Deputy’s Top 5 Tips for ‘Teens off Screens’ during the holidays
With the holidays just around the corner, many parents (myself included) brace for the familiar battle over screen time—a tug-of-war that seems to play out in households across the country. When it comes to life’s curveballs, applying problem-solving strategies early often proves that prevention is better than cure.
With the battle ahead in mind, I have listed five practical strategies that might help you reduce your teen’s time on screens. Good luck! If you have any strategies that work well in your household, I’d love to hear them—please feel free to share via scottwilliamson@wollemi.nsw.edu.au
Model Appropriate Screen Use
Demonstrate balanced screen habits yourself, as teens often emulate parental behaviour. This is the most important tip—and sometimes the hardest to stick to! “Do as I say, not as I do” is difficult for the teen brain to process, and he will likely dismiss any plans you have in place to minimise online activity.
Establish Screen-Free Zones
Designate specific areas, like the dining room, as screen-free to encourage family interaction during meals. At Wollemi, meals shared as a family—and without phones—are common practice. Keep it up!
Encourage Physical Exercise:
Have your teen earn screen time through exercise. For example:
2 minutes of physical activity = 1 minute of screen time
Or, if physical activity is a challenge, try 1 minute = 2 minutes of screen time
Activities might include bike riding, long walks, kicking the footy, doing weights, mowing the lawn, or a HIIT session. Give your teen options—and get him moving!
Create a Family Media Plan
Develop a plan that outlines acceptable screen use and ensures consistency among all family members. Be sure to include yourself—see Tip #1.
Reflect and Adjust
At the end of the holiday break, take time during a family dinner to reflect on the strategies you used to reduce screen time—what worked well, what didn’t, and what could be improved. This gives your teen a voice in how screen time is managed and helps shape a more effective approach for the future.
As we approach Holy Week, I wish all families a time of peace, reflection, and renewal. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break.
From the Chaplain

A holiday well spent!
In what feels like the blink of an eye, a jam-packed Term 1 is coming to an end. A term highlighted by numerous sporting events, excursions, father and son camps and hours of hard work and dedication within the classroom!
I paid a visit to many classes this week and it was so pleasing to hear the boys reflect on their learning and growth throughout the term. Improving handwriting, completing the PRC, learning new strategies in mathematics, making an interesting Google Slides presentation and completing a quality model of the planets were just some of the answers I received when I asked the boys what they had achieved in Term 1.
In order to maintain this positive momentum from Term 1, the boys must continue to keep their minds and bodies engaged in meaningful and interesting activities throughout their holidays. To plan for this, I will be challenging the boys to consider a number of different focus areas (by using a clever acronym shared by Mr Bernie James at a recent Mentor’s Meeting).
F F F F F A
These letters can help the boys prioritise their focus to ensure they achieve balance throughout the holidays. I will be asking the boys to complete one task/activity which has each of the following areas as a focus.
F - Family - Do something that benefits your family - it could be chores, it could be playing with your siblings, it could be spending time with a family member.
F - Friends - Connect with your friends throughout the holidays - organise to play at a park, play sports or ride your bike. Stay connected with your friends and help develop meaningful friendships with your school friends and neighbours.
F - Faith - Make prayer an important part of your break. Consider setting aside some time for quiet reflection and prayer - praying the morning offering each day, it is a great way to start the day!
F - Fitness - Make sure you are active and complete at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Walk, run, ride your bike, bounce a basketball or kick a football - physical activity comes in many shapes and sizes but it is important we all prioritise our physical health - get mum and dad involved in your physical activity.
F - Fun - Smile, laugh and have fun! Each day we should be doing things that we enjoy and make us, our family and our friends happy. Build some Lego, use your imagination, create a new game and make sure you involve your siblings in your fun games and activities!
A - Academics - Although it is a holiday break, it is important that we still prioritise our learning and academics - read for at least 30 minutes a day, write a short story, complete some mathematics revision or learn about something new. Keep your mind active with Sudoku, find-a-words or other challenges!
Trying to achieve one task for each of the areas above should help to keep their minds active (and hopefully cut down the number of times our parents may hear “I’m bored”).

Mundoora Captain - Jayson De Villiers

Finally, today I would like to share our final article for our Leadership Spotlight for Term 1. Please read below to learn more about our wonderful Mundoora captain, Jayson de Villiers.
-----------------------------------
Hi, my name is Jayson. I am South African, and I come from the Devilliers family. I came to Wollemi in Year 3 and have been here for 2 and a half years.
I am the captain of Mundoora, the Green house at Wollemi. I am meant to lead the younger boys in Mundoora and guide them through the right path and guide all younger kids to do the right thing and be obedient. If younger boys have a problem with their school work or friends at school, they can come see me. I am an understanding leader who will do my best to keep calm and listen to others.
The positive impact I will make on this school is by embedding my name in the school as Mundoora Captain 2025. The impact is going to be setting up fundraisers to help people less fortunate, and the fundraisers are going to involve fizzy drinks, pancakes and fundays. All these fundraisers, where you can buy delicious drinks and a lot of different food, go to different causes that can change lives.
The things I like doing are athletics, rugby, touch footy, soccer, I like some video games as well and helping others. Like I said earlier, I am South African. I was born and raised for about 2 years in the free state in South Africa. My grandparents live on a farm in the free state and are currently visiting us in Australia. I hope you learned a bit more about me and who I am and who I want to be. Thank you.
Captain's Corner

It’s the last week of a long term of hard work. Congratulations, boys, on all of your hard work and effort.
Reframing is seeing things in a different light, that makes you happier and healthier. Reframing means taking something that challenges you, and seeing it as an opportunity for growth. Complaining, on the other hand, takes this same challenge and turns it into a threat.
Chronic complaining stresses you out, hurts your productivity and focus, and saps your energy. Learning to reframe means we can make the most of every challenge we face, and it gives us more energy, focus, and strength.
Look at things that make you sad, angry, or stressed as opportunities to grow. See challenges as a chance to grow, to build your virtues, your patience and fortitude. See how you can help others in your struggles and how your struggles provide the ability to grow into a stronger human for a better life ahead.
Enjoy a fun and productive holiday!
Matthias S. School Captain
Lenten Appeal
We are running a Lenten Appeal, where students can donate money to Caritas Australia, an Australian Catholic agency for development cooperation and humanitarian aid. They have been helping people in poverty for over 60 years.
The boys can donate money for the next TWO WEEKS. It would be awesome if the students could offer up a single McDonald's meal or a couple of dollars that they would like to spend on themselves to make a small sacrifice and give it to people who need the money a lot more than we do. A small sacrifice, a small donation from one of our students, can make a huge difference for someone who lives in poverty. It could be life-changing.
If a class raises $250, they will be able to throw water balloons at any Year 12 student they like! That is just a bit over $10 per student. Hopefully, we can raise a lot of money to help a lot of people.
Student Life
Stations of the Cross
We are running The Stations of the Cross every Friday in lent for anyone who would like to join.
It will be at 1:15pm, during lunch on Fridays. All students and teachers are welcome to come and join.
This is a great way to make a small sacrifice and grow closer to Jesus in lent. It is a small sacrifice to give up a lunchtime, but it is a great opportunity to offer up a small mortification for a specific intention. It is very beneficial in preparing for Good Friday which is upcoming.
Basketball Match Priests vs Year 12s

On Wednesday, March 26, the Holy Spirit Seminary Basketball Team, aka Parramatta Priests, came to Wollemi for the annual game and talk. Before the game, the priests engaged with the Year 10 students, sharing valuable insights and inspiration. Both teams displayed remarkable skills on the court. However, despite the Year 12s' determination and experience, luck wasn't in their favor. The Holy Spirit Seminary Team clinched a clear victory, finishing the game at 34 to 16. Better luck next time Year 12s! A rematch is definitely on the horizon.
A big thank you to Demir U., our Year 11 student and talented photographer, for capturing the event!
Year 5 Father and Son Camp

On Saturday, the 5th of April 2025, Year 5 had their Father Son camp at Blue Gum Lodge, up in the picturesque Blue Mountains.
After a brief catch up which included morning tea, the sons and their fathers embarked on a variety of fun-filled activities, which included multi-golf, catapult and free sport (which consisted of swimming, basketball, futsal, touch footy, volleyball, cricket - THE WORKS!)
We then had our Annual Rosary by the campfire, with Jeremiah T, Vincenzo Z, Patrick S, Dominic S and Toby W leading a decade of the Rosary each. It was a wonderful way to wind down Day 1. But before we headed to bed, we had a great Father Son BBQ (which we did to knock the energy out of the kids before bed - it worked a treat!) and games. It was a fantastic end to the day - with the wonderful singing efforts adding a soothing comfort to those going to sleep (so they think).
The next day started with a bushwalk which consisted of some slips and many leeches (which I didn't realise until I got home!) but the scenery was amazing! Some went swimming, some played cricket but the energy was the same across all activities.
We would like to thank Father Felix and Father Anthony for Mass at camp, Andrew Zahra and Danny Morched for helping with the running of the camp, Mr Johnson for organising it, and the Fathers and Sons for another wonderful Father Son camp. Thank you to Mr Baxter, Mr Uyeda and Mr Attia for turning up with their children. The kids got a massive kick out of seeing you all there! A HUGE thank you goes to Mrs Geagea, for organising and picking up the food for the BBQ. It was a hit! Thank you!
To think, there are only 3 more Father Son camps for this group. It is a privilege watching them all grow up and I am looking forward to the next one already.

Premier's Reading Challenge - Term 1 Update
Wollemi has once again made a strong start to the Premier's Reading Challenge in 2025.
By now all students should have received their Premier's Reading Challenge Username and Password. Just a reminder that all students must use their Wollemi College account issued this year (Instead of logins from Montgrove or any previous schools).
Due to some technical difficulties experienced by other schools, the Premier's Reading Challenge has been extended for 2025 - Students now have until Friday 19 September to complete their online reading records. Hopefully this will mean a record number of Wollemi Students will complete the Challenge this Year.
Congratulations to the students who have already completed the Challenge.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers for Argyna, her family, her class and the Montgrove School community.

Please remember to fill out an absence form on Engage if your son is attending. We are expecting a large number of people at the funeral, so please be prepared for standing-room only.
For those who would like to offer a monetary contribution — as is tradition in Filipino families — the Santigo family kindly ask that any donations be given personally, placed in an envelope.
Any families who are unable to attend are welcome to join the family’s Novena prayers over Zoom, which they are continuing to have every evening at 8:00 pm until Sunday. You can join the Novena prayers via this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86092721211?pwd=8JvIgaY8kfe842TQ3cPUMbNAzQa85t.1
Term 2 Parent-Teacher Interviews
Parent-teacher interviews are an excellent opportunity for rich conversations about your son’s education to happen. While we always hold to the primacy of our mentor system, we recognise that it is also beneficial to give direct feedback to you from your son’s teachers.
The interviews for Years 2-11 will be held on Monday, April 28, Term 2. The interviews will deal with your son’s strengths and weaknesses, his work ethic, behaviour and knowledge and skills in each subject.
The upcoming parent/teacher interviews are for Subjects assessed formally and do NOT include non-assessable subjects and/or activities such as Daily Admin, Mass Reading lessons or Ignite lessons. If you wish to speak with your son’s teachers of one of the above non-assessable subjects/activities, please get in touch with them via email or phone.
If possible, it is preferable for the Secondary boys to attend the interviews to ensure that parents, students, and staff all have the same ideas regarding their sons' studies.
Primary boys are not required to attend.
Term 2, Week 1
Date: Monday, April 28
Interview times for Primary and Secondary:
8:30 am to 7.30 pm (with staff breaks blocked out throughout the day)
To book an interview, please access your Parent Teacher Online (PTO) account. Parents have been provided their PTO username and PIN in a separate email.

2025 Term Dates
School Times
The school gates will open at 8:15 a.m., and students are not allowed onto the school premises before this time unless they have co-curricular commitments. If you are dropping your child/children off before 8:15 a.m., please remind them that they are to stay outside the gates until they are opened.
A reminder that when collecting your child/ren, parents can either:
Park their car in the outside car park and walk into the school/pedestrian gate to pick up their child
Use the car line process where your child will come to the car.
To help with the flow of the carline and traffic in the area, we kindly ask that:
If you are using the car line, we ask parents not to exit the car.
Please collect your child/children between 3.25 pm and 3.45 pm when Teacher supervision ends.
This is a reminder to parents NOT to park along Gipps Rd in the afternoon, as it causes congestion and risks the safety of our students.
Car Line Pick-up
The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount importance at Wollemi. As you would appreciate, with the commencement of a new school term, and the continued growth of the school population, the volume of traffic in and around the College has increased during afternoon pick-up. As a result of this, we have taken some measures to improve the parking at the College with the expansion of the overflow car park. To help ensure the effective traffic flow and our Wollemi community's safety, I take this opportunity to remind you of the College’s pick-up procedures.
Main Carpark (inside the College)
1. Entry into the school is via the second gate only.
2. Students are only to be collected in the green pick-up area (see diagram above)
3. The curb by the buildings is set down and pick up only (noted in green) – no parking. Do not alight from the right-hand side of cars in the set-down lane. Please be especially vigilant that children ONLY alight on the left.
4. Please do not double park in the set-down lane; instead, wait for space to become available on the curb.
5. Please remain in your vehicle until your son arrives.
6. When waiting in the carline to collect your son/son, please move to the front of the line or fill any empty space available along the pickup area to ensure traffic flow and maximise space.
Please watch for young students crossing on the pedestrian crossing from the school veranda entrance to the carpark.
Overflow car park (outside the school)
7. Students are only to be collected in the green pickup area (see diagram above)
8. Please Park only in the designated parking bays - as noted in yellow on the diagram
IMPORTANT NOTES
Please ensure your son knows which carpark he will be picked up from in the afternoon.
To further assist with traffic flow and reduce parent wait time in the car line, please remind your sons that they must be watchful for the approach of your vehicle on Gipps Rd so that they can be ready for collection.
We hope these measures will help improve traffic flow within the College, reduce congestion, and ensure student safety. We appreciate that the afternoon pickup period can be busy, and we ask that we continue to be patient and courteous to each other.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Bill Turner Cup Round 1 v Kingswood High School
Our U15s kicked off their Bill Turner Cup campaign with a tough match against Kingswood High School, falling to a 6-0 defeat. Despite the result, the boys showed determination and resilience throughout the game.
With many of the squad eligible to compete again next year, this match provided valuable experience that will help them grow as a team. A standout performance from Arus Gurung earned him Man of the Match honors, displaying great effort and leadership on the field.
This result marks the end of our 2025 campaign, but the team will take plenty of lessons from the experience. A big thank you to Mr. Johnson for transporting us to the game.
