Deputy's Dispatch

I begin this update with an inspiring moment of charity, initiative, and goodwill demonstrated by two of our Year 10 students, Marco C and Chris E. While attending a recent driver education seminar, a girl in the audience suffered an epileptic seizure. This drew significant attention, and many students naturally moved toward her to see what was happening. Standing nearby, Marco and Chris quickly formed a protective wall around her, allowing the medics to administer first aid without disruption. Their swift actions prompted other adults to join, creating a human barrier to protect the girl's dignity. Marco and Chris’s quick thinking and selflessness exemplify the values of compassion, empathy, and responsibility. They have set an outstanding example of how we should care for others in times of crisis. Congratulations to Marco and Chris for representing their respective families and our school.
Last Thursday, the Wollemi music room was packed with student performers and their parents for the inaugural Wollemi Soirée! What a fantastic night. Every performance was deserving of individual praise, but sadly, I cannot highlight each one here. I will report a few highlights of the evening. Midhvan K, the emcee for the soirée, kept the audience both engaged and informed throughout the evening with his infectious enthusiasm and thoughtful insights about each performer. Midhvan also performed a beautiful piece on the piano. Davey O and Dominic N performed an amazing trumpet duet, Marcus E wowed us with his vocal talent and Gabriel K sang the most beautiful rendition of the Beetle’s Michelle, accompanied on guitar and backup vocals by Uriel and Barachiel A! Gabriel also played bass guitar whilst singing with grace and control beyond his years. After his performance, many in the audience could be heard shouting, 'Encore!' Thank you to the students who volunteered their time to run the backstage and technical aspects of the evening! A special thank you to Melissa Lamrock, our Head of Music for orchestrating (pun intended) the event. Ms Lamrock was suffering a nasty chest infection in the lead-up and during the event but battled on bravely to ensure the event ran as planned - as they say in showbiz, the show must go on!
- Year 8 Father & Son Camp
On the theme of firsts at Wollemi, a huge thank you to Mr Paul Garziniti for running Wollemi College’s Market Day Stalls. I won’t steal Paul’s thunder by writing about the day; he has a piece later on in the newsletter.
Congratulations to the U/16 Wollemi football team, with special thanks to Mr. Joseph Chaghouri, for organizing a wonderful Father’s Day breakfast! Now in its third year, the Father’s Day breakfast remains a wonderful tradition for our dads and students. Special mention to Daniel M in Year 11 who sold coffee to the fathers and staff. He roasts the coffee beans at home and is quite the barista. I certainly enjoyed my two flat whites, as did all the teachers and dads!
As I write this, Year 11 students are on day two of their annual exams. Their next round of assessments will be their first as Year 12 students, in Term 4. Term 4 represents the first term in their final academic year as senior students. Our current Year 12 students are revising course content, picking the brains of our Year 12 teachers and doing as many past papers as possible in readiness for the HSC, next term. Please keep all of our senior students in your prayers over the next 3 months.
Many of our Year 8 students and dads shared their last father-and-son camp at the picturesque Point Wolstoncroft. Once again, to not steal the thunder of Raph A who is writing a blow-by-blow description of the camp, I will not detail the awesome activities across the weekend. However, an activity I will point out is the letter of gratitude each dad and son jointly composed to their wife/mum. The deep thought and heartfelt discussions between fathers and sons about the most important woman in their lives were a blessing to witness. I hope each Year 8 mum received a lovely surprise upon the return of their loved ones! Mums, if you did not, remind your husband or son to give it to you!
Following the success of the Cool Your School initiative, organised by Mr Nathan Quan, the final step of the process was to spread mulch. On Tuesday afternoon, the Year 10 students, ably assisted by Year 2G, spent a period spreading the mulch together. Year 2 boys were buddied up with the older boys and worked collaboratively to fill, move and spread many buckets of mulch. Watching the connection between our older and younger students was a true joy. Year 10 were encouraging, supportive and kind and the response from our Year 2 boys was brilliant - you could see the pure excitement on their faces as they ‘mixed it up’ with the big boys!

Wollemi Primary - Making a Difference
How long is the average shower in Australia?
How much water does an average shower use?
How can we change our attitude and behaviour to help conserve water?
These are some important questions currently being explored by a number of Year 6 students who are involved in the Swarovski Foundation Waterschool Australia program. The program challenges students to create a 30 minute peer to peer teaching lesson which aims to educate young people about an issue/topic which is important to them. The topic must be associated with water conservation and in 2024, the boys have chosen to address the topic of water wastage due to longer showers.
The boys are working collaboratively to design an engaging and informative learning experience which they will present at an upcoming event in late October.
This is another great opportunity for students in Primary to make a meaningful difference in our world. This has been a consistent theme throughout 2024 with so many of our amazing students involving themselves in initiatives to make the world a better place - from Kids Help Line and Cancer Council Fundraisers to the Greening Australia program which led to the planting of 200 native trees, it is great to see so many of our students aiming to make a difference!
A positive culture of reading - Premiers Reading Challenge 2024
Last month, the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2024 concluded. It was so pleasing to see our final figure of over 80% of Primary students completing the challenge.
There is a great culture of reading at Wollemi and competitions such as the PRC allow our dedicated readers to be rewarded for their fantastic efforts in this area.
The Primary Leadership team will organise an Olympic-themed Primary sports day (complete with an ice-cold snack) on Friday, 27 September as a reward for this pleasing result in the PRC! More information to come.
Book Week activities for 2024 have begun this week - look out for a comprehensive overview of all activities in our final Pine of Term 3 in Week 10. We look forward to seeing our wonderful Year 2 and Year 3 families at the College on Friday 13 September for our annual Book Parade and Family Picnic - it will be a memorable day for all involved!

Captain's Corner

I don’t know about you, but I am the devil’s easiest target when I am rushed and harassed and pushed. And when I’m not, I am a total angel (or so I have been told). There were times this year when I was convinced my bucket had sprung a leak. I cross off one thing on my “to-do” list and miraculously another three items take its place.
It was at these times that I would be tempted to be stingy with my time, resources and kindness, patting my “philanthropical” back for being such a wonderful person thus far. And then He would ask me to look to the cross and see the bleeding Son of God and I knew that I know nothing of what real giving is.
When I stopped to think about it, I realised that my bucket wasn’t leaking at all. My “need to do’s” were not so dramatic and were nothing compared to the overflowing resources I have in Christ.
I tried stinginess, and it didn’t work.

School Community Prayer for our Year 12 Students
The School community is invited to pray for our young men as they sit their HSC Trials this week and HSC exams later this year.
A School Community HSC Prayer
Heavenly Father, we bring before you our HSC students. Give them the gifts of wisdom, right judgement, knowledge and courage.
Bless them with calm hearts and clarity of mind as they sit for their exams. May they be affirmed in their efforts and may they know that you are there with them.
We pray that they will stay calm under pressure and work to the best of their ability. May they feel your loving presence in their lives, now and always, and may they be strengthened by the prayerful support of us, their school community.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen
Math Clinic has again started very strongly this term.
Remember: Math Clinic runs in D01 every Monday and Thursday during lunch.
Term 2 was a busy one with many students attending the week of their assessment tasks, so it was very difficult to answer every question in time!
I encourage all students to reflect on how they are progressing and begin preparing for assessment tasks weeks prior to the task. This includes bringing your questions to your teacher and to Math Clinic early to avoid the congestion later in the term.
Parents/carers, if you have any questions regarding Math Clinic, feel free to contact me at john.abielias@wollemi.nsw.edu.au.

Primary Debating
Last Friday, 6 September, Wollemi Yr 5 debated Belfield with the topic: "That we should stop selling bottled water". Everyone had a great morning! Both negative teams won these contests; the first debate went to Belfield and the second to Wollemi. Several mums and all of Year 4 came to cheer us on.
We are now deep in preparation to see if we can find any way to make a dent in the mighty debating armour of our formidable opponent in two weeks: Montgrove School for Girls. May the force be with us...! Thanks to Mr Ison for adjudicating.

Victor Chang School Science Awards

Established in 2004 in honour of pioneering cardiac surgeon, Dr Victor Chang, the Victor Chang School Science Awards celebrate gifted students, and stimulate growth in science. The School Science Awards foster and encourage an interest in science among Year 11 students, with the goal of encouraging careers in science as a viable and interesting career path.
Students are nominated by their teachers and schools for their tenacity and commitment to science. This year we congratulate Fouad E. and Matthias S. in receiving the Victor Chang School Science Awards for 2024. The boys were presented their awards at Penrith City Council.

Year 10 Commerce Market Day
On Thursday 5 September, our Year 10 Commerce class ran a Market Day, as part of their Unit of Work, “Running a Business”. Students worked in small groups throughout Term Three to plan their small businesses, which they would eventually implement in the form of market stalls.
The boys produced some excellent quality business plans, which included things such as:
evaluating various business options
- coming up with a final concept
- conducting market research
- completing a WHS risk assessment
- determining costs, potential revenues, and what would be required to break even
- promoting their businesses to attract interest and sales
- determining the most effective means of taking payments
- many, many logistical considerations
As with most business ventures, not everything went to plan, but the boys put in a great effort overall. There were many victories, and also some harsh lessons learned about the difficulties of running a real-life business
All in all, this initiative was an extremely valuable experience for our students, and there was a great atmosphere on the day.
On behalf of the Year 10 Commerce class, I'd like to thank the whole Wollemi College community for your support of this day (and the many days and weeks involved in preparation for it).
And, for those wondering, we managed to raise $2145.50 which will be donated by the College to St Vincent de Paul!

10B Rock Climbing
Starting in Week 6 and finishing in Week 10, 10B students will take on rock climbing. Each week, they'll face new walls, with the difficulty increasing as they go. This program is designed to push their limits and build confidence. It's going to be a thrilling experience for all involved!
Year 10 PDHPE: Inclusive Game Assessment
Year 10 students recently took on the challenge of creating modified games for people with disabilities as part of their assessment. They were eager to teach their new activities to the class. Below are photos of one group’s game, "Blind Golf," where players, blindfolded, relied on a guide to help them navigate the course.
Year 8 Father & Son Camp
When we got there we had morning tea and were introduced to the guides and we learnt what we would do over the course of the next few days. Then we put our stuff in the rooms and were ready for the activities.
There were 2 activities. Fishing and Biking. no one in my group caught anything but it was fun because we had a lot of time to talk to each other.
Then we went biking. Biking was good. My group may have had 8 people but the ride was thrilling especially when Seb Gaspi fell over in the sand.
We made it to the beach and it was a great view for photos. We rode back and Arya fell. We walked together for a little while until we were ready to go.
When we got back we went to mass with Father Anthony. We all had a good time. It was a little loud with the birds. Then we had lunch and they served a burger with chips. It was delicious. The chips were good and crispy, especially with all that tomato sauce.
When that finished we went back to the cabins to change and go kayaking. We had an introduction on what to do if we capsize and more safety rules. I went with Javier. We had a blast. Even though my arms were screaming to stop, we still went. John Paul and Arya were splashing everyone. So we started a revolution. Everyone teamed up to capsize them but it did not work. Overall, kayaking was the best activity.
Then we went to the cabins to get changed for dinner. But before dinner, we had some free time. We played basketball, I did not do very well but we all had fun. Me and Kilm dominated obviously.
Dinner was chicken schnitzel and chips. They were great. John Paul got a bit mad when we put tomato sauce on the chicken but it was better that way. So many people did it and JP was really mad. Dinner took a while but then we had dessert. I did not have any but apparently, it was the best. Ice cream and brownies YUM.
Then we had a talk with Mr Williamson. There were many arguments put and many questions asked and they were all answered. It taught us a great lesson and we all learnt from it. Then we had a fire. We made skits about the dads. They were very funny. We did many varieties of skits and there were many jokes made. We then did the rosary and it was very good with the warm fire.
We had to wake up really early as Mass was at 7:30 am.
I got changed and was ready to go. After mass we had breakfast. We had a wide range of food from bacon and eggs to pancakes. There were little juices that vanished from the stand as they were favourites. Breakfast was great. Then we did a letter of gratitude to our mums And I had to go.

Stage 4 PDHPE
In week 7, Stage 4 students had the chance to dive into Paralympic sports, tying in with the excitement of the Paris Olympics. They took part in Goalball and Sitting Volleyball, both designed to promote inclusivity in sport.
The students really got involved, showing great teamwork and adaptability as they tackled these new challenges. It was a fantastic week, with everyone gaining a new appreciation for Paralympic athletes and the skills required for these sports.

Later in the day, Year 6 parents organised a Father's Day stall. A heartfelt thank you goes to Mrs. Zahra and Mrs. Hanna for their invaluable support with the Year 6 activities. The stall was a success, raising $868, which will fund a special gift for the school from Year 6.
Finally, a huge shout-out to our Wollemi staff dads, who we hope had a wonderful Father's Day!
