From the Headmaster

It has been a real whirlwind kind of ending to this term, which explains why you are receiving this newsletter later in the week than usual. On Wednesday, we farewelled the Year 12s at their formal graduation ceremony, followed by a lovely luncheon facilitated by our own Mrs Wiggins with the help of Mrs Pincevic and Mrs Devine. We also farewell a number of graduating families, some of whom have been with us for many years; Boby, Brown, Cabrera, Filamor, Jayavarapu, Johansson, Macaraeg, Mackenzie, Mackenzie, Manglik, Maruncic, McDonald, Rufo, Saha, Satheesh Kumar, Stead, Tupene-Paulo and Vashisht. A special thank you to the Pincevics and Johanssons for their wonderful work as class parents, and also to the other couples who have filled this role over the years. What a wonderful community we have at Wollemi, and what a privilege for me to be able to thank the entire graduating Class of 2024 on behalf of all for their trust and support, and for their varied contributions over the years. A particular highlight for me was Mr Wright’s speech to the boys; his last after many years of service to this community and specifically of leadership to our senior boys.
I was not able to contribute to the last newsletter due to accompanying the Year 9 boys in their Ski Camp during Week 8 of the term. It was a real highlight for the boys, not just of the year but perhaps of their schooling, as many had never seen snow. I was most impressed by the growth our students can experience in such a short time when they have the motivation to step out of their comfort zones. Many were very much daunted by their first effort, but through perseverance and mutual support, every one of them conquered the slopes.
No sooner had Mr Johnson returned from running the Year 9 Ski Camp that he accompanied the Year 8 boys and their dads to Point Wolstoncroft for their Father and Son Camp. This was the last of 7 camps these boys and dads have attended together over the years. Attendance at Father and Son camps always demands effort. It is an investment of time, energy and money. It also requires the cooperation not only of those who attend but also of the mums and siblings who stay behind to ‘hold the fort’. However, it is a worthwhile effort, as the bonds that are established and deepened thanks to these camps last a lifetime. Nothing illustrates this as the fact that at the conclusion of the Camp, our campers had to be approached by management and reminded about the need to vacate the premises. No one wanted it to be over!
The final games of the season will take place tonight—come out and support our Wollemi Basketball teams as they compete in the Season Finals! The U16 Div 2A and U16 Div 2B games will start at 5:30 PM, followed by the U18 Div 2B and U18 D3 matches at 8:00 PM.
As I mentioned at the start of this term, Term 4 is extremely short. It is also a time of year when functions multiply and time seems to move faster than usual. It is therefore crucial that our students - and their parents whenever possible - have a good holiday break. This doesn’t mean doing nothing, but changing occupation: doing things we don’t normally get to do.
At the beginning of next term, we will host the final event of our 25th Anniversary celebrations: The Wollemi 25th Anniversary Spring Fair on Sunday, October 20. Pre-sale bracelets for rides are available now at a special price, various food stalls and hobby vendors as well as performers are gearing up for the special day. We look forward to seeing everyone there to commemorate this important milestone and show your support for our school.
Lastly, congratulations to Marlene & Robert De Meo on the birth of baby Olivia, sister to Samuel (5B), Mark (4G) and Joel (2B) and Clare & Tom Horsfall on the birth of baby Talitha, sister to Maximilian (4B).

RUOK Day

On Thursday, 12 September, Wollemi Secondary students participated in RUOK Day. All students arrived dressed in yellow and black clothing to help share awareness of the important theme of the day - checking in with their mates and asking, with regularity, R U OK?
Throughout the day, Mr John Khoury, the school counsellor, organised workshops in which secondary students could participate. The Deep Convo Workshop encouraged students to connect and socialise with classmates outside their usual friendship groups. It provided an opportunity to explore and appreciate others' perspectives and advice, fostering a sense of support and understanding in line with RUOK Day’s message. Behind the Mask helped students gain insight into the psychology of both a bully and a person masking their vulnerabilities. They learned to recognise the hurt or insecure individual behind the outward behaviour, rather than simply seeing someone as the ‘bad guy.’ The workshop emphasised that while understanding these perspectives is important, it in no way condoned bullying. In the Dopamine's Journey Workshop, students were shown a visual representation of their brain and how an imbalance of dopamine could affect their motivation and mental health. The workshop demonstrated how the activities the boys engaged in could influence this imbalance. The RUOK’s Message Workshop involved a presentation on the RUOK 4-step strategy to equip our students with the skills to check in on their friends' well-being.
The steps included:
Ask: Starting a conversation by asking, “Are you OK?”
Listen: Listening with an open mind, without interrupting or judging.
Encourage Action: Suggesting positive steps, like talking to a trusted adult or seeking support.
Check In: Following up to show ongoing care and support.
The workshop explored the active listening element at a deeper level, emphasising the importance of being fully present and empathetic when supporting a friend.
At recess, we continued the tradition of students sharing a KitKat with a friend. A chocolate shared between friends was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
A huge thank you must go to Mr Khoury for his effort and passion in coordinating the day. The purpose of an event such as this was to help our students remember that reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Checking in with friends regularly helps create a culture of care and connection. By maintaining open lines of communication and being attentive to each other's feelings, we can build a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and understood. Encouraging these strategies not only benefits individual mental health but also strengthens the community as a whole.
Scott Williamson, Deputy Headmaster

As Term 3 draws to a close, I thought it important to look back at the many memorable events that have occurred, across the 10 weeks. I discussed these events with a number of students and asked them to comment about their experiences. A number of the comments from the Primary boys can be seen below.
It is important that in looking back at these events, we acknowledge the dedication and commitment of our amazing Primary staff, without whom, these events and opportunities would not be possible. The success of events such as the Lego Masters Day or Book Week Parade only come about due to great organisation and exceptional efforts from staff.
Book Parade and Family Picnic -
It was a fun day and was so good to spend time with my family here at school.
Book Parade was fun - I was sure I was going to get stage fright, but I didn’t! It was actually really fun.
We had so much fun with ALL of the activities - I was scared to go up on stage, but I am so happy I was confident enough to do it!
Book Week Parade made me scared and nervous, but I was so proud of myself for getting up on stage and presenting my character!
The sports and activities at our family picnic was so fun - I can't believe I scored 6 runs playing cricket!
Market Day
The Market Day from Year 10 was so good. Even though the lines were so long, the food tasted SOOO good!
Market Day food was tasty and delicious - it looked really hard to organise the day but the students did their best
Market day was really good how the high school students set it uo - they organised it all on their own and did quite a good job - food was tasty even though the lines were long!
Father’s Day Breakfast
Having dad here for Father’s Day breakfast was really good - I like spending time with dad and eating sausage.
It was delicious - having a chance to speak my dad and spend some time with him in the morning was very special.
Year 3 Excursion to Cockatoo Island
It was so fun getting to check out Cockatoo Island - I enjoyed seeing the prison areas and learning about how the convicts lived in early Australia. The sandstone tunnel was truly amazing. Some convicts even escaped and got caught months later!
Captain's Corner

In a recent mentor meeting with my mentor I was asked a rather simple question - "What are three things that you can take away from your time at Wollemi?". I came across this question yet again when asked to fill out an exit survey from the school. Oddly enough, I found this quite difficult to answer. Not difficult because I didn’t have many things to take away from my time at Wollemi, but difficult due to there being so many different answers to said question. And upon further reflection, I realised that through my years of schooling, Wollemi has taught me a great many things, but perhaps their greatest gift of all, was the emphasis placed on gratitude.
Now the word gratitude is thrown around a lot these days, particularly in a school such as ours, often times so much so that we tend to forget the considerable importance of this one singular virtue. As my time at Wollemi was drawing to a close, it was events like the Primary Fun Day and the Valete Lunch that cast this virtue into the limelight. Indeed, it was in preparation for my address to the school earlier this week, that I realised we can never be grateful enough. Every time I think I've thought of everything, there's yet another thing to be grateful for.
As someone once said, "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more."
So if there's one last message I can pass on to you, it is this, be grateful. For the little things not just the big things, be grateful for the gift of life. Give thanks because we have been given so much.

School Community Prayer for our Year 12 Students
The School community is invited to pray for our young men as they sit their HSC exams in October.
A School Community HSC Prayer
Heavenly Father, we bring before you our HSC students. Give them the gifts of wisdom, right judgement, knowledge and courage.
Bless them with calm hearts and clarity of mind as they sit for their exams. May they be affirmed in their efforts and may they know that you are there with them.
We pray that they will stay calm under pressure and work to the best of their ability. May they feel your loving presence in their lives, now and always, and may they be strengthened by the prayerful support of us, their school community.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen
HSC Design and Technology 2024

As the Class of HSC Design and Technology 2024 brings their Major Design Project to a close, I could not be prouder of their accomplishments. This year has been a journey of immense personal growth, marked by the development of character, self-awareness, and the cultivation of key virtues such as patience, humility, perseverance, and temperance. While some may not have achieved the results they initially hoped for, I am confident that the lessons they’ve learned over the past year will stay with them for a lifetime.
These young men started the year brimming with confidence and ambition but discovered along the way that their greatest takeaways were patience, humility, and perseverance. For many, the biggest challenge they faced was themselves, yet they found solace in routine, dedication to their studies, and the occasional late night working tirelessly on their portfolios.
As they move forward, these Wollemi men will forge their own paths, driven by a desire to make a difference and fill the needs they encounter. Their journey was one of hard work and determination, facing the temptation to procrastinate head-on and overcoming it to complete their Major Design Project. The skills and character they’ve honed during this process will undoubtedly guide them in the great things they are destined to achieve.

Year 9 & 10 Commerce Excursion
On Thursday 19 September, our Year 9 and 10 Commerce students had the opportunity to participate in a field trip to Luna Park.
Year 9 Ski Camp
From the 8th to the 12th of September, Yr 9 was away from school and home. They were at Ski Camp. The weather was a bit warm, but we went skiing nevertheless. There we saw beautiful snow capped mountains, open starry nights and people skiing, as well as falling, down the slopes.
All of the class managed to learn the basics of either skiing or snowboarding by the end of the camp, and quite a few decided to go adventuring to the top of the mountain. This was thanks to the ski instructors, who were quite skilled and friendly. It was also thanks to them that no one got seriously injured, though little crashes were quite frequent, and part of the fun.
The lodge that we stayed in was a nice and toasty place that kept us from freezing to death. I would say it gave us great nights of sleep as well, except the fire alarm went off the second night, waking everyone up and making the next day slightly harder to get through. The food provided was also exceptional, with whole three course meals provided for dinner. Menu items included pasta, chicken schnitzel and roast beef. Gigi, our guide, deserves gratitude for ensuring that we did not veer wildly from the timetable.
The feeling of skiing or snowboarding is like no other. Wind whistling past your face and snow flying up behind as you rocket down the slopes of Perisher. Of course, first you need to learn how to stop, or it could end rather badly, as many of us found out. The chairlifts there were also a huge gift, saving us from having to walk up the mountain.
There were a number of key takeaways from this camp. We learnt to not leave our classmates behind while skiing or snowboarding, lest they got stranded on the wrong side of the mountain. We learnt the importance of responsibility for our own items, as with the many pieces of equipment that we had to carry around, it was quite easy to misplace things. And we learnt to strengthen our bonds as a class, which was inevitable after spending nearly a week together in the same lodge.
Massive shoutouts to the teachers: Mr Dodd, Tamayo, Joseph, Ramos and Johnson for enduring the sleep deprived nights with us, and especially to those who drove what must have been over 12 hours throughout the course of the trip. And a big thank you to Fr Felix, who performed masses at various churches and heard confessions for us. This camp was truly a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.
Augustine Phua, Year 9
Wollemi Book Week 2024

What an incredible Book Week we had in Week 8 this term! From engaging guest readers to a visit from a celebrated author, our week was filled with creativity and joy, celebrating the magic of reading.
Guest Readers Galore!
We kicked off the week with six fantastic guest readers: Mr. Ramos, Mr. Williamson, Mr. Wright (Senior), Mr. Kenny, Mr. Pincevic (our 2024 Vice Captain), and Mr. Baxter. Each reader captivated our Year 2 students with delightful picture books by the talented Gabriel Evans, igniting a passion for storytelling among our young learners. Year 2 voted on Wollemi's Picture Book of The Year with "A Friend For George" taking the crown.
A Visit from Gabriel Evans
On Tuesday, we had the immense pleasure of welcoming Gabriel Evans himself! He shared his inspiring journey to becoming an illustrator and led an interactive workshop, teaching our students how to draw their own book characters. The creativity and enthusiasm in the room were truly contagious!
'Write a Book in a Day' Challenge
In a remarkable display of talent, our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the 'Write a Book in a Day' activity. They collaborated to create some amazing pieces of literature that showcased their unique voices and ideas. It was a proud moment for both students and teachers as we witnessed the incredible stories that unfolded.
Wollemi's Annual Book Parade
The week culminated in Wollemi's Annual Book Parade, where our Year 2 and 3 students donned their most imaginative costumes. We were thrilled to see such creativity on display, with students and teachers alike dressed as their favourite book characters.
Family Picnic and Fun Activities
The festivities concluded with a lovely family picnic on Wollemi grounds. It was a perfect way to unwind, enjoy nibbles, and connect with one another. Families participated in outdoor activities like the Sack Race, Scavenger Hunt, and kicking competitions, ensuring a day filled with laughter and fun.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of Book Week with a special mention to Mr Justin Lockley who always goes above and beyond to share that reading is magic. Your enthusiasm and participation made this celebration truly memorable. We look forward to bigger and better Book Week celebrations in the years ahead.
Happy reading!
Mr Nathan Quan and Mr Justin Lockley

Montgrove/Wollemi Mums' Night
On Friday we hosted the Wollemi & Montgrove Mums Wine & Cheese Night. It was nothing short of enchanting. Set against the backdrop of smooth jazz, the evening executed class providing the perfect setting for mums to unwind and connect. The evening was absolutely delightful. The serene atmosphere, enhanced by ambient lighting set the perfect mood.
In the centre of the room was an extravagant grazing table, beautifully arranged with a tempting selection of meats, fruits, pastries, chocolates, cheeses, and more paired with a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic punch to enjoy. A big thank you to Daphne who was the bartender on the night allowing guests to be treated to a night of culinary delight and great conversation.
It was wonderful to see mums from both schools in attendance embracing the opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new faces. There was definitely conversation and laughs filling the room.
Also a big thank you to Evelyn Finianos, Cindy Lapid and many of the wonderful mums who helped in the lead up or on the night for hosting such an enjoyable evening amongst our community. Until next time.
