From the Headmaster

We have marked the half-way point of Term 2 at Wollemi with a number of significant community events. On Sunday, 26 May, more than 300 of us gathered at School for Mass and a Family Pilgrimage around the new shrine. Our first official act at the shrine was followed by a wonderful family picnic where Mr Spagna’s ‘paella’ competed with the good old Aussie barbeque manned by Mr Zahra and his team. Many thanks to all who attended and contributed to the wonderful event.
Last Wednesday, we were blessed with a visit by Bishop Vincent Long, of the Diocese of Parramatta, to lead our Eucharistic Procession. Bishop Vincent told our students, staff and parents gathered during his homily that “here at Wollemi we are so blessed with so many symbols of our Catholic faith… but let us also interiorise, let us imbue Christ in all that we say and do… so that everyone we meet, everyone we encounter and speak to, may experience something of the Eucharistic Presence as well”.
Our students showed wonderful piety throughout the solemn procession. This was made easier by the wonderful work of so many volunteer parents to decorate the various altars. I encourage you to look at the pictures, as I feel my description would fall well short of the mark. A big thank you to Bishop Vincent and the local parish priests who joined us: Fr Jeff and Fr Brendan from St Marys, Fr Joseph from Glenbrook, Fr Andrew from Kingswood and our own PARED graduate, Fr Chris from Springwood.
A massive thank you to our many presenters at our Key Parent Function last night. The aim of the evening was to foster many discussions among our parents on various topics relevant to the different age groups. It was very well attended by parents who were more than ready to share, and learn, which made it a success.
Please note in your diaries the changed date for the Athletics Carnival - 27 June - which was needed due to the current state of the grounds. Also, our first Dad’s Night for the year - as last term’s was ‘washed out’ - will take place on 21 June. The Mass for the feast of St Josemaria is on 22 June. Finally, don’t forget to purchase your tickets for our 25th Anniversary Gala on 2 August.

Deputy's Dispatch

Last week, I ‘supervised’ 6 Year 10 students - Hayden C, Justin H, Joseph M, Micah A, Joseph D and Johann J at Jordan Springs Public School while they delivered the Catechism program to Years 3,4,5 and 6 students. I used quotation marks for the term supervised in my previous sentence because the Year 10 boys did not require supervisory strategies or suggestions - I sat back and enjoyed the show! Each Year 10 student was attentive to the needs of every student in their groups, they articulated the message with kindness, listened actively to their students and delivered the content with enthusiasm and diligence. Not only was their content delivery sublime, they were able to engage at least 70 students in the room. I am sure the other Year 10 students involved in the program are equally as committed and professional.
At the recent Secondary Assembly, I acknowledged 5 students for outstanding community service:
Yr 11 Matthias S and Dhanvin M for spending their own time after school to help pack up after the Eucharistic Procession.
Yr 10 Jayden Y for regularly spending time with a primary student who needed support with his learning.
Yr 12 Ekshvaak M for his support with stage and sound technology.
Yr 10Jacob J for going above and beyond when preparing for the Eucharistic Procession.
Yr 11 Lucas I for his support at all school events requiring photos - his skills are exemplary.

From the Chaplain

The Eucharistic Procession last Wednesday was a very special event at Wollemi, when we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary. Bishop Vincent wanted to celebrate it with us and in his homily he showed his joy at how we live our Faith and we passed it on to the students, staff and parents.
Pope Francis had his Procession in Rome last Sunday. Here you have some words from his homily:
“ The Eucharistic bread is a real presence. And with this, he speaks to us of a God who is not far away, who is not jealous, but close and in solidarity with man; who does not abandon us, but seeks us, waits for us and accompanies us, always, to the point of putting himself, defenceless, in our hands”.
We don’t want to take for granted the real presence of Our Lord in the Tabernacle of the chapel at Wollemi. Don’t forget to come to see Him every time you visit the school for a mentoring meeting, training or sports events!
Fr Felix, Chaplain

As we bid farewell to the month of May, a month where we pay tribute to Mary, I would like to take this opportunity to remind our Primary boys of an important message and challenge from Fr. Felix. At Mass last week, Fr. Felix reminded the boys of the importance of taking the time to greet our Lord each morning by paying a visit to the Chapel. A positive habit that many Primary boys have already formed. As we gathered at the first altar during our Eucharistic Procession last Wednesday, I thought of Fr Felix’s words and realised that an important addition to this morning routine should also involve visiting our Wollemi Shrine to greet Our Lady.
Primary boys, a new goal to consider; begin our day by visiting the 2 most important sites at Wollemi, our Chapel to say good morning to Jesus and the shrine to say good morning to Mary.
Marian Pilgrimage 2024
On Friday, all Primary boys had the opportunity to participate in our annual May Pilgrimage.
Junior Primary (2-4) travelled to Our Lady Queen of Peace to say the Rosary, dedicated to Our Lady, before a short journey to Ryde Aquatic Centre where they spent the afternoon swimming, sharing the space with the Year 2-4 students from Redfield. I congratulate all Year 2-4 boys for their reverent participation in prayer and responsible behaviour whilst at the pool.
Senior Primary (5-6) remained at school, prayed a beautiful Rosary with their Redfield peers and then participated in the annual PARED CUP. The sports were very competitive and played in great spirits, with our Wollemi boys coming out victors, breaking a 4-year drought. The Cup is back at Wollemi!!
Captain's Corner

In recent weeks we have had a number of activities that brought excitement to our otherwise ordinary school life. In particular, there were two events that reflect the Catholic ethos and principles that we so firmly encourage at our school. On Friday of Week 4, we had our Secondary Pilgrimage Day, during which we separated into our house groups and set off to start our annual pilgrimage. Though I was only with one group that day, the solemnity and quiet respectfulness that I observed were encouraging to see. Everyone behaved admirably and represented our school well, with one passerby even commenting on how well-dressed we were. Similarly, the Eucharistic Procession last week was met with equal solemnity as our Lord was taken throughout the school grounds.
As the year progresses, I begin to feel more and more keenly the fact that my time here and that of my classmates will soon be at an end. After more than 12 years of schooling, we will never again wear the summer school uniform, we will never take part in another swimming carnival or Eucharistic Procession at school. Or as Mr Jacobson often tells us, "Only 13 Mondays left of school". I do not mean to be morbid when observing these things but rather encourage you all to use wisely the time given to us and to cherish these otherwise ordinary moments.
I would also like to take the time to congratulate our year 5 and 6 primary boys on their win over Redfield College in the annual PARED Cup. It's comforting to know that the trophy is back safe at its home in Wollemi after spending three years in a rival territory.

Year 2 Excursion to Elizabeth Farm & Hambledon Cottage

Last week, our Year 2 students went on a thrilling journey through history as they visited Elizabeth Farm and Hambledon Cottage. This enlightening excursion was centered around the theme of "Now and Then," allowing our young historians to compare life in the past with life today.
At Elizabeth Farm, the students stepped into the shoes of the Macarthur family and their servants, exploring what daily life would have been like in the early 1800s. They were fascinated by the chores undertaken by the servants, from ironing to tending gardens, gaining a deeper appreciation for the simpler yet resourceful way of life back then.
One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to engage in traditional children's games, transporting the students back to a time before smartphones and video games. Students enjoyed games that were popular in the past, connecting with the playful spirit of generations gone by.
Student Leadership Seminar

What a phenomenal day at the Stonecutters Ridge Golf Course. The day started off with some icebreaker activities including Redfield, Wollemi and Montgrove all participating with some questions being thrown at us to break the silence that was around when we arrived. Our first guest speaker Seb Burfitt arrived and gave us a talk about how to be a people's leader and how to do the ‘uncool’ thing as a leader and make sure not to develop tall poppy syndrome that is prominent around schools. Seb’s amazing talk taught us all a valuable lesson on being a people person and how it is important to develop relationships with not just people in your class, but everyone in the school. After this, recess and lunch allowed everyone to talk and bond with a bit more freedom.
Our second and last guest speakers of the day were some Wollemi old boys Joseph Hoffman and Michael Kerbage. We received some advice about planning out your year as a leader and how decisions made by the captains should be made and influenced by peers. This makes sure that your year and school get what they think is best for them and I think this was a bit of a wake up call for the boys, especially me, about planning out the future. After the questions, we had a bit of Q & A with Joseph and Michael after lunch getting advice on how to handle sticky situations that come with being a leader and how to handle some situations that we are facing now. Finally, the day ended off with a bit of collaboration with the boys on how we could improve certain aspects of the school and how we could achieve it.
William M., Year 12 Mundoora House Captain
So, last week, we had a Leadership Conference with Montgrove and Redfield. Oddly, the other schools didn’t bring their younger leaders, so the conference was mainly aimed towards the seniors. We had a nice presentation from our Guest Speaker, Sebastian Burfitt, who talked about the makings of a leader: someone who was authentic, who could service and sacrifice, and most striking to me, someone who could actually “lead” their peers. Afterwards, we had a Q&A Panel with two Wollemi Alumni - Joseph Hoffman and Michael Kerbage. They brought up many enjoyable anecdotes from their past as students, which were both fun and taught valuable lessons. I think my most important takeaway from their panel was Joseph Hoffman’s advice - that the best thing to do was to be friends with Jesus and to keep him first in our life, especially as a leader. We ended the day off with some proposals that each school’s SRC could work on, and presented these ideas and ways we could execute them, keeping in mind the valuable lessons we had been taught by our Guest Speakers. This experience was fun, and I hope that it continues on in the future! Special thanks to Mr James and Mr Johnson for hosting and making it as enjoyable as possible.

Years 2-4 Primary Pilgrimage Day
Our annual 2-4 pilgrimage took us first to Our Lady Queen of Peace Gladesville (Yes, we ended up at the wrong church for the second year running!) where Mr. Reyes led the Rosary, setting a tone of reverence and dedicating the month to Our Lady.
Afterward, we headed to the Ryde Aquatic and Leisure Centre for over two hours of swimming and fun. It was made even better by having our brothers from Redfield College alongside us, sharing laughs, splashes, and a hint of friendly competition.
This day wouldn’t have been possible without our parent volunteers who supervised and assisted throughout. We owe them a big thank you for their time and support, which made the day safe and enjoyable for all.
Our journey reminded us that sometimes the unplanned moments are the most memorable. Through laughter, prayer, and brotherhood, the Wollemi College 2-4 Pilgrimage showcased the strength of our young men and the community around us.

2024 Year 5 & 6 Pilgrimage & PARED Cup

It was wonderful to host our brothers from Redfield and do a pilgrimage at home in front of our Shrine Our Lady of Wollemi last Friday 31 May.
To top it off, we’ve accomplished a historic achievement. Our Year 5’s and 6’s have broken the “Ramos Curse” and brought the PARED Cup back to Wollemi College! This is the first time in 4 years that Wollemi has held the cup and the first time since Mr Ramos has been our headmaster. The boys competed in basketball, soccer, oztag, and ultimate frisbee, and I’m proud to say, we won more games in each category. Congratulations to all the boys who participated and thank you to our brothers at Redfield for making the drive down. We look forward to competing again next year.
Dustin Uyeda, Head of PDHPE (Primary)
Secondary Pilgrimage

On May 24th, the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians, Wollemi high school students and staff embarked on our annual pilgrimage. Each of the 4 house groups went to various parishes around Western Sydney and the lower Blue Mountains. What a fantastic Marian event to see out the month of May!
I visited Our Lady of Victories in Horsley Park with my house group and I must say, I was stunned! Such a beautiful church that I'd never heard of, nor come across. The school house captains lead their respective houses through the main part of the Rosary when we all arrived at our respective locations.
When the boys returned back to school, we had a huge sausage sizzle and a drink in celebration of the day. Once the saussie sangas settled, sports were played and great fun was had.
To cap the day off, there was a Teachers VS Year 12 soccer match. I'll cut to the chase, it was a 1-0 victory for..........TEACHERS! The Great Wall of Garzaniti could not be broken through. Year 12 didn't have any answers when the teachers' second Italian import - Dominici - caressed the ball past the keeper for the one and only goal of the game.
Huge thanks to Jack, the front office ladies and all those who helped to plan and organise the day. A resounding success...hopefully putting a huge smile on Our Lady's dial.

Wollemi 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner
As you know, 2024 marks 25 years since the original group of students began their journey at Orchard Hills Preparatory School in 1999. That small group of kindergarten students, with some exceptions, carried on under a different name some years later at Werrington, and eventually became the first graduating class of Wollemi College.
Wollemi has been incredibly fortunate to have the unwavering support of our families who recognise the value of a PARED education and upbringing. Some of the original families are still with us. Others now have grandchildren attending our schools. They have all witnessed the enduring benefits for their children and future generations.
As part of this year’s celebrations of this significant milestone, Wollemi will host a Gala Dinner on Friday, 2 August at Novella on the Park, inviting Wollemi past and current parents and staff, alumni and friends of Wollemi.
Given the importance of the 25th anniversary, we anticipate that this celebration will draw a large number of people from our school community, past and present. To ensure you do not miss out, secure your spot by booking early using this link.
Please contact Camille Wiggins (or any one of the committee members; Kristine Zamora, Tamara Zahra, Josephine Khairy, Joseph Chaghouri, Anne Bernacer and Rebecca Aoun) should you require assistance in finding or filling a table.

Wollemi Family Pilgrimage Day
300 people from the Wollemi Community attended the Wollemi Family Pilgrimage Day on Sunday 26 May here on Wollemi College grounds, with Fr Inigo, Vicar of Opus Dei in Australia and New Zealand and Fr Felix celebrating Sunday Mass and Mr Ison and Year 11 Students leading the rosary after.
It was a wonderful opportunity to teach our boys how to show our love for our Lady and finally open the Wollemi Shrine in prayer together as a School community. We were blessed with magnificent weather to match a beautiful day.
A special thank you to Mrs Aguilar and Mrs Wiggins for setting up the altars and to Mrs Devine for generously donating flowers for the Shrine of Our Lady. We also would like to thank Mr Zahra for donating the sausages and cooking them for lunch and Mr Nico Spagna for the delicious Chicken and Seafood Paella we had for lunch.
We hope to make this a yearly event during the month of May.

2024 Wollemi Eucharistic Procession

Last Wednesday we had the Annual Eucharistic Procession at Wollemi. This event is an important moment of formation for the boys (together with the First Fridays), where we try to teach them the importance of showing respect and honour to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. And this year was a special one. In addition to the usual ways the year 12s are involved in carrying the flags and the different items for the procession, this year we tried to get the students involved in a new way: by designing a flower carpet over which our Lord would pass.
The idea was to show our affection to our Lord by making the best path we can do, as he comes out of the tabernacle and walks around our school. One important part of this project was to make the boys participate in the preparation for the procession, as in the past I have seen boys joining the procession almost grudgingly. You see...Mums are usually heavily involved in preparing the altars, and staff were heavily involved in the preparation, but the students, in the past, were simply following our Lord and praying, which is a lot. But knowing how boys are, I thought they needed to do something to appreciate the solemnity of the occasion.
I proposed a simple design to them, but it was great to see how teachers as well as students went above and beyond in the creation of the flower carpet, with the creativity of love! It was particularly moving to see how parents, teachers and students worked together and were willing to be very generous with their time and resources to show our love for our Lord in the Eucharist. It was a risky project, but it was worth it. And I'm already looking forward to next year.
I would like to thank all the staff and parents ( Years 2, 3, 7, 8 families) involved in preparing the altars: they looked amazing! And thank you to Year 4 mums for the lovely afternoon tea for Bishop Vincent Long and visiting priests: Fr Brendan & Fr Jeff (Our Lady of Rosary St Marys); Fr Andrew (St Joseph Kingswood), Fr Joseph Lam (St Finbar's Glenbrook ) and Fr Chris del Rosario ( St Thomas Aquinas Springwood). On occasions like these, I am very proud of the great community we have here at Wollemi.

Wanderers Five Tournament
On Monday 3rd June, Mr Tu'ipulotu, Mr Breen and Abel A (Year 10) took 2 Wollemi teams (Blue and Green) down to Blacktown International Sports Park for the Wanderers Fives tournament for the Nepean regional championships of the competition.
After a frantic start to the day which resulted in Mrs Lepan, Mrs Doyle, Mrs Tu'ipulotu and Mr Tu'ipulotu transporting the boys to the venue, both teams navigated their groups to finish first in Groups A and B respectively, resulting in an all-Wollemi final!
The final resulted in a victory for Wollemi Blue over their brothers from Wollemi Green, with the game played in good spirits, fairness and fun. Wollemi Blue will now represent the school at the Wanderers Fives finals, facing off against other regional winners.
Thank you to Mr Bayliss and Mr Uyeda for organising this great opportunity for the boys. A HUGE thank you to Mrs Lepan, Mrs Doyle, Mrs Tu'ipulotu and Mr Breen for transporting the boys to and from the venue. A debt of gratitude to Abel A for taking time out of his day to help coach the Wollemi Green team.
