From the Headmaster

Despite significant challenges thrown our way by recent wild weather, our two Swimming Carnivals proceeded smoothly and without incident. A big thank you to Mr Bayliss, Mr Uyeda and the entire staff for making it so. I was particularly pleased with the leadership by our senior students. Our Year 12 students led in their own particular low-key way by their cheerful participation in every event available to them. Their positive attitude, together with the obvious close bond with each other, had an impact on the whole carnival. I am confident this positive influence will extend to other areas of school life throughout the rest of the year.
We were extremely proud to host Mr Alexandre Harvard at Wollemi, last Thursday. He spoke to our senior boys about the virtue of magnanimity. This virtue, he explained, is the willingness to undertake great tasks; it is the source of human greatness. Later in the afternoon he also presented to the staff of both Wollemi and Montgrove, further explaining that the task of education is to bring out greatness in others. Mr Havard expands on these ideas in his book “Created for Greatness: the Power of Magnanimity” which I definitely recommend.
On the topic of leadership and bringing out greatness in others, congratulations to our newly elected School Representative Council members: From Year 12: Zack M & Ekshvaak M, Year 11: Matthias S & Hayden C, Year 10: Joseph W & Abel A, Year 9: Alexander E & Adam EM, Year 8: Raphael A & Theo L. On Tuesday, we had a Leader's Morning Tea where I had a chance to spend time with and get to know our new leaders. I encouraged them to join in our now-established tradition of servant leadership, and to serve their fellow students not just with new ideas and initiatives, but by also being a voice for others. This starts with not just listening, but by looking: paying less attention to ourselves and our concerns, and more to those around us. I am excited to work with this wonderful team of students.
Finally, it is with great sadness that I announce that next week we will farewell Mr Mark Ranftl. Mark has been an invaluable member of staff at Wollemi since 2012. Mark has been instrumental in the development of our Music program, peripatetic tuition and concert bands. His co-curricular involvement and his willingness to help out have been outstanding. We wish Mark the best of luck in all his future endeavours.
James Ramos, Headmaster

As we hit the midpoint of Term 1, I encourage all Primary Boys and their families to consider how they have started the school year.
Is your son working productively in class and completing his best work?
Has your son developed a solid homework and reading log routine?
Is he developing positive relationships with their peers, teachers and mentor?
Is your son putting our weekly mottos into practice?
These are important points to consider and with the help of your mentor, should help form the basis for your son’s goals for Term 1. If you are yet to book a time with your son’s mentor, please do so at your earliest convenience. Mentor sessions are invaluable for all families and lead to great benefits for all of our boys at Wollemi.
Please also reach out to your son’s class teacher, or to me, if you have any questions or need anything clarified.
Primary Swimming Carnival
A huge congratulations to Echuca for their win in the recent Primary Swimming Carnival and to all boys who competed on the day. We make special mention of the following students who were awarded Age Champion Medals.
8 Years – Leonardo de Souza
9 Years – Elijah Leggatt
10 Years – William Casserley
11 Years – Joel Leggatt
12 and 13 Years – Sime Simat
Also a huge thank you to Mr Bayliss and Mr Uyeda for their tireless work in organising the carnival and for preparing the Wollemi College Swim Team who competed at the recent Hills Zone Swimming Carnival.
NAPLAN 2024
NAPLAN examinations will be held during Weeks 7-8 for students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9.
While we wish all students the best of luck, it is important to remember that NAPLAN is simply a snapshot of a student's skills at one point in time.
Communication regarding NAPLAN dates has been sent to all Year 3 and Year 5 families - if you have any questions regarding NAPLAN, please email lukebaxter@wollemi.nsw.edu.au.
Performance Assemblies 2024
In 2024 we will have a number of dedicated Performance Assemblies, giving each student an opportunity to showcase their talents on stage. In Term 1 and 3, B classes will be performing and in Term 2 and 4, G classes will perform. These performances will be planned in classes and dates will be set aside for these performances each term.
We invite parents and families to attend these performances - they are held in the College COLA.
Term 1 Performance Assembly Schedule:
Premier’s Reading Challenge 2024
Mr Lockley has officially launched Wollemi’s Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2024. We encourage the boys to begin logging books in their booklet and online. We are setting a lofty goal to have over 80% of Primary boys complete the challenge this year. A goal I strongly believe we will surpass! Happy reading!
Mr Luke Baxter, Head of Primary
Captain's Corner

A fortnight ago at Wollemi, a humble ping pong table became the site of an epic showdown. It was akin to Ned Kelly’s Last Stand at Glenrowan. But instead of multiple gunslingers on either side, there were only two men holding paddles.
On one end was Wollemi’s treasure and beacon of light, Father Felix, crouched like a shortstop, swinging his arms to keep his muscles loose. His opponent looked tough, the man’s eyes locked on Fr Felix. His mouth set in a fierce line. Mr James was not going to go easy on his sweet smiling opponent.
They volley, the ping pong ball fiercely ricocheting from one end of the table to the other.
Tie game.
And then…Mr James goes in for the winning smash.
Game and match!
What was so remarkable about the match was each players’ resolve. No hesitation, no indecision. The only thing going backwards and forwards was the ping pong ball.
As we approach the midway point of Lent, we may feel our resolve weakening as the end seems so far off. But let us not be ping pong Christians, “like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind”, but set our eyes on the prize “taking every thought captive” so that our lives match the faith we profess. Let us resolve to trust God always, to lean into Him and not into the comforts of this world.
At the end of the day, we have a choice to be a victor or a vacillating ping pong ball.

Student Life
Wollemi Student Representative Council 2024

The Wollemi Student Representative Council (SRC) plays an important role in the fostering and developing of student leadership within the College. The Wollemi SRC has 20 members including: The School Captain and Vice Captain, School House Captains, two representatives from each grade (Years 7 - 12), as well the Captain and Vice Captain of the Primary School. This leadership model helps give significant representation within the school and the development of leadership across a larger range of year groups.
The Wollemi SRC has three key goals:
To represent the interests of the student body, both at a year group and school level - to voice concerns and to present initiatives that will enhance the life of students at the College.
Develop house spirit and school community
Serve both the school and wider community
Congratulations to the following Wollemi men for their selection to the Wollemi Council for 2024.
Please note that Year 7 elections to the Wollemi Council will occur in Week 7 of this term - we have many new Year 7 students.
I look forward to seeing the great work and ideas of this student-led council.

Year 3 Father and Son Camp
This past weekend, we had the Year 3 Father and Son Camp at Yarramundi. The dads and boys braved the adrenaline rush of the Giant Swing. They showed off their problem-solving skills and teamwork in the Alpine Rescue – with mixed success but also plenty of fun. There were also some fierce soccer and basketball games, swimming in the river, and a campfire with marshmallows.
The Dads’ get-together on Saturday night was epic, with a coal BBQ, chess, and music provided by Placidus Bhandoo and others. Leon Ortega gave a talk on parenting and marriage which was followed by some thought-provoking discussion about strategies for making a happier home.
Big thanks to Jack Johnson, David Breen, Fr Anthony Khoudair, and the teachers who came to visit. Thanks also to the Yarramundi staff and to all the dads and boys for their engagement throughout the camp. Thanks especially to those who contributed food and drinks to the dads’ get-together. Looking forward to next year!
Staff in Focus
My name is John Abi-Elias, the new Head of Mathematics at Wollemi College. Currently I am teaching both Year 7 classes, the Year 10 5.3 class, and the Year 11 Advanced/Extension 1 class. I am currently in my 16th year of teaching, which makes me feel old when writing that!
I was born and raised in Punchbowl in the South-West of Sydney. I am a graduate of St Charbel’s College, being of Maronite Catholic heritage. I grew up playing rugby league, cricket and volleyball, and coached all of those sports in my time as a teacher.
I married my beautiful wife Christine, who is of Filipino heritage, in 2014. We have four children here on Earth and a few who have already made it to their heavenly home. Helena is in Year 3 at Montgrove and Lucia is in Year 1. Dominic will start Kindy in 2025 and Thomas in 2027. I am blessed to be able to build my family with Christine and we are extremely happy to have joined the Montgrove/Wollemi community. We are relatively new, only moving from Lidcombe in January of this year, but have been warmly welcomed at every KPF and gathering we have attended so far.
I adhere to the philosophy that every young man should pursue, according to his abilities, an ideal similar to that of the Renaissance Man, but of course based on a strong grounding in faith. I encourage all my students to work hard at everything they do, read as much as possible, play sports and exercise, socialise (not use social media!) and learn at least basic “handyman” skills. This will ensure that they are best prepared when they are Duc in Altum – put out into the deep.
John Abi- Elias, Head of Maths
Maths Clinic
Math Clinic has started very strongly, with a turnout of around 7-12 students per session, which is pleasing to see!
Remember: Math Clinic runs in D01 every Monday and Thursday at lunch. Don’t wait till the week before an assessment task. If you have a question regarding the content you are learning in class in a given week then pop in and ask – you don’t have to stay for the whole of lunch.
Keep up the good work gentlemen, and hope to see more of you in the coming weeks.
John Abi-Elias, Head of Maths
ART EXPRESS 2024
A brilliant day to allow our year 9/10 and 11 students to experience the ARTEXPRESS with the 2024 cohort. The day as always started well with a very-very long walk to the station from Wollemi College, I thank Mr. Mark Ranftl for accompanying us to this extraordinary exhibition that showcased the talents and hard work of some of the 2023 HSC students.
The 9 to 10 students had to choose a favourite artwork to analyse, draw, and provide inspiration for future studies in the visual arts. Year 11 students on the other hand had to choose 3 artworks that inspired them from an aesthetic standpoint and from the student’s conceptual framework that showcases their relationship with the world.
Overall a successful trip that we will be doing again next year.
Mike Tolentino, Visual Arts

Premier's Reading Challenge 2024
The Premier's Reading Challenge is now open for 2024. Wollemi students have hit the ground running with more than 20 students logged on and adding books to their online reading records.
By the end of this week, all primary classes will have received their Premier's Reading Challenge login information. It is important that students use the login details provided instead of accounts from their previous schools (including Montgrove accounts). Students will not lose any progress towards the special award levels.
Students may include books read from September 2023 until the conclusion of the challenge in August. All reading records must be entered online to receive a certificate.
If there are any secondary students wishing to participate, please encourage them to visit me in the library to receive their account information.
I look forward to providing updates throughout the year.
Happy reading,
Justin Lockley

General Notices
Car Line Pick-up
The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount importance at Wollemi. As you would appreciate, with the commencement of a new school term, and the continued growth of the school population, the volume of traffic in and around the College has increased during afternoon pick-up. As a result of this, we have taken some measures to improve the parking at the College with the expansion of the overflow car park. To help ensure the effective flow of traffic and the safety of our Wollemi community, I take this opportunity to remind you of the College’s pick-up procedures.
Main Carpark (inside the College)
1. Entry into the school is via the second gate only.
2. Students are only to be collected in the green pick-up area (see diagram above)
3. The curb by the buildings is set down and pick up only (noted in green) – no parking. Do not alight from the right-hand side of cars in the set-down lane. Please be especially vigilant that children ONLY alight on the left.
4. Please do not double park in the set-down lane but wait for space to be available on the curb.
5. Please remain in your vehicle until your son arrives.
6. To ensure traffic flow and maximize space, when waiting in the carline to collect your son/s, please make sure you move to the front of the line or fill any empty space available along the pickup area.
Please watch for young students crossing on the pedestrian crossing from the school veranda entrance to the carpark.
Overflow car park (outside the school)
7. Students are only to be collected in the green pickup area (see diagram above)
8. Please Park only in the designated parking bays - as noted in yellow on the diagram
IMPORTANT NOTES
Please ensure your son knows which carpark he will be picked up from in the afternoon.
To further assist with the flow of traffic and to reduce parent wait time in the car line, please remind your son/s that they must be watchful at this time for the approach of your vehicle on Gipps Rd so that they can be ready for collection.
We hope that these measures will help allow traffic within the College to flow more effectively and reduce traffic congestion whilst ensuring student safety. We appreciate that the afternoon pickup period can be busy, and we ask that we continue to be patient and courteous to each other.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
- The diagram pictured clearly outlines the traffic flow procedures for student collection points at the College and indicates the no parking areas. The key points to note about each car park are: No parking on Gipps Rd (noted in red)
School Times
The school gates will be opened at 8:15 am and students are not allowed onto the school premises before this time unless there are co-curricular commitments. If you are dropping your child/ren off before 8.15 am, please remind them that they are to stay outside the gates until it is opened.
A reminder that when collecting your child/ren parents can either:
- Park their car in the outside car park and walk into the school/pedestrian gate to pick up their child
- Use the car line process where your child will come to the car.
To help with the flow of the carline and traffic in the area we kindly ask that:
- If you are using the car line, we ask parents to not exit the car.
- Please collect your child/children from 3.25 pm and 3.45 pm when Teacher supervision ends.
- Reminder parents NOT to park along Gipps Rd in the afternoon as it causes congestion and risks the safety of our students.
Student Attendance
Start of School Day
Classes commence at 8:40 am each day. All boys are expected to be at school before this time.
Supervision for students will be provided at the school from 8:15 am each day. Students will not be admitted to the school until this time.
End of the School Day
The school will conclude for ALL students at 3:25 pm.
Late to School
If your son is late to school, he is required to sign in at the Front Office BEFORE moving to class.
Early Leave
If your son needs to leave school early due to an appointment, parents/guardians must notify the College either by submitting an Early Departure Student Daybook in the Parent Portal. Before leaving campus, your son must report to the Front Office to sign out. If you are collecting your son from the College, he is to be collected from the Front Office and not the classroom or other school areas.
Absence from School
If your son is absent from school, we ask you to complete the form “Wollemi Absentee Form” from the Parental Portal on Engage PRIOR to the commencement of the school day.
Signing in for Mass Attendance
It has been great to see an increased number of students coming to daily Mass at School, so that our chapel is almost full everyday. Parents are welcome to attend Mass with their sons, either on the set day in Primary or on any day their Secondary sons choose to attend. Unfortunately, as the space in the chapel is very limited, we are unable to offer daily Mass to parents as a regular alternative to their local parishes. We also ask that any parents attending Holy Mass please sign in at the Front Office.

Sports News
Primary Sports 2024
Aloha Wollemi Ohana,
I hope everyone is having a smooth start to the school year! Most of you know me, for those who do not, my name is Mr (Dustin) Uyeda and I am the current Year 5G teacher. Recently I have been appointed the Head of PDHPE (Primary). Due in part to the successful growth of our primary rugby program last year.
We are only six weeks into the school year, and we have already successfully had our primary swimming carnival, 11 of our amazing primary athletes went on to represent us at Hills Zone Swimming carnival yesterday. Five of our students represented our school at Hills Zone basketball trials. We also had two rugby showcase games, for our Year 3/4s and Year 5/6s. It was amazing to see how quickly some of our Year 3’s have picked up rugby. It is also great to see all the returning players continue to develop their skills.
If your son is interested in learning the sport of Rugby, we will have fitness/skills sessions every Monday at lunch. We will also have touch footy on Tuesdays for Years 3 and 4, and Thursday for Years 5 and 6. When I am able to schedule a gala day or a friendly match with another school, we will resume rugby training.
My goal is to have at least one event per term for each sport (rugby/soccer/basketball). Whether it be a friendly match against ourselves (Wollemi vs Wollemi), Gala Day, or a friendly match against another school. I would like to grow basketball and soccer at Wollemi the same as we did with rugby last year. After working here for three years, I truly see how many amazing athletes we have here. The more exposure and experience we can provide for them, the better!
With the help of our amazing primary athletes, I look forward to continuing to grow rugby (and all other sports) here at Wollemi College!
Mr Uyeda, Head of PDHPE ( Primary)
Primary Swimming Carnival
While the competition for places to attend the Hills Zone Swimming Carnival was at the forefront of many students’ minds, this didn’t stop our boys from providing amazing support for their mates throughout the carnivals with lots of house colour, noise, and fantastic races.
The house chants created by our house captains were a highlight of the two carnivals.
Congratulations to all of our race winners!
Special thanks must go to the teachers who all played a role in ensuring the two carnivals ran safely and smoothly. Thank you also to the Year 11 helpers at the Primary Carnival who did a great job supporting the teachers and the students through their races.

Hills Zone Swimming Carnivals
Firstly, congratulations to all of our Primary and Secondary students who qualified to attend the Hills Zone Swimming Carnival on Monday. This alone is a fantastic achievement and you should be proud of your efforts to get there.
Our day started with our Primary Carnival. The primary boys showed great resilience and persistence regardless of how they were going in their race. They always ensured they gave their personal best until the end.
Special mention to Joel Leggatt, Elijah Leggatt and Ethan Lemoncito who placed in their events. Markus Fakhry also won his heat.
Our secondary boys endured a long afternoon of events but always ensured they were ready to go when it came time for them to compete. Many students who have attended Hills Zone Swimming Carnival in the past bettered their previous achievements. It was great to see our boys' willingness to try and achieve their personal best.
Special mention to Artold Cabillan and Lucas Lombardo who placed their events.
AICES and CIS Teams are to be announced by Hills Zone shortly.
Thank you must go to the students for giving their all, to the parents for their support of the boys throughout the day, and to Mr Dustin Uyeda, Mr David Breen and Mr Luke Dominici for assisting in the organising and logistics of the day.
