From the Headmaster

We are certainly into the swing of things with so many exciting events happening at Wollemi. A big thank you to all the parents who joined us for our first Key Parent Function of the year. It was a great opportunity to witness directly the growth of our school and to welcome personally so many new families. Another wonderful highlight of the start of the year has been our two Father and Son camps so far, for Year 2s and Year 7s. With the Year 3 Father & Son Camp coming up on the first weekend of March. Thank you also to those parents who were able to join us last week for our first Whole School Mass of the year on the occasion of Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent.
Many of our mentoring conversations at the moment revolve around resolutions for Lent - that season of the year when the Catholic Church encourages us to give something up and offer it in sacrifice to God. We do this in preparation to celebrate the Resurrection at Easter, modelling the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert preparing for his public ministry.
I am encouraging the boys to consider that Lent is not just giving something up, but taking something up. Prayer and almsgiving are also traditional penitential practices. Recently Pope Francis has inaugurated a Year of Prayer ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, calling on the faithful “to intensify prayer to prepare us to live well this event of grace and to experience the power of God’s hope.” Many of our boys will be living Lent by incorporating some extra prayer into their daily routines, such as making a brief visit to the Blessed Sacrament upon arrival at school.
Next week on Wednesday 28 February we will have the opportunity to listen to Alexandre Havard at Chatswood on a Pared Academy event titled 'Pay Cheque with a Purpose', an opportunity to discover a new drive to do great things, attain genuine success at work, and unlock a flourishing personal life. In addition, I am proud to announce that we will host Alexandre Havard at Wollemi on Thursday 29, and our senior students, as well as Wollemi staff, will have the opportunity to meet him and listen to his wonderful advice.
Finally, I look forward to the opportunity to meet many of you at our Swimming Carnivals this week: Primary on Thurs 22 and Secondary on Friday 23 at Ripples. Come and support the boys, and witness our wonderful House spirit in action!
James Ramos, Headmaster
From the Chaplain

After Ash Wednesday the countdown to the Holy Week starts… 40, 39, 38, 37, 36, 35, 34 days today! Time goes quickly, let’s take advantage of this time very well.
As St Josemaria explains, “ What better way to begin Lent? Let's renew our faith, hope and love. The spirit of penance and the desire for purification comes from these virtues. Lent is not only an opportunity for increasing our external practices of self-denial. If we thought it was only that, we would miss the deep meaning it has in Christian living, for these external practices are — as I have said — the result of faith, hope and charity”.
Pope Francis suggests spending more time in adoration: ‘Let us return, brothers and sisters. Let us return to God with all our hearts. During these weeks of Lent, let us make space for the prayer of silent adoration, in which we experience the presence of the Lord, like Moses, like Elijah, like Mary, like Jesus. Have we noticed that we have lost the sense of worship? Let us return to worship”.
Fr Felix, Chaplain

We have had A busy first few weeks in Primary!
Classes have now settled in and the hard work across all curriculum areas has begun. It has been pleasing to see so many students engaged in their learning and getting back into the routines of day-to-day life at Wollemi. One of the important routines we are looking to further develop in 2024 is the use of our nightly Reading Log. Please ensure your son reads each night and remind them to get in the habit of completing their Reading Log. Reading is a skill for life and something we are always looking to foster. develop here at Wollemi.
In addition to the great learning of the early weeks of the term, I am also very proud of how our first school events have been embraced by the community.
A huge thank you to the Wollemi Basketball Club for their organisation of our Shrove Tuesday celebration - a well-organised and highly successful fundraiser.
The reverence and respect shown by the boys at our Ash Wednesday Mass is a testament to their strong faith and understanding of the importance of Lent.
It was also great to hear of all the successes of our Year 2 Father and Son Camp - the boys certainly took home some great memories (and some of the dads even took home some bumps, bruises and leech marks).
Year 6 students held elections in Week 3 to elect our Primary House Captains for 2024. We congratulate the students below who have been voted in by their peers. They will have significant responsibilities at all Primary sports carnivals but will also have week-to-week tasks to complete in support of our Primary Captain and Vice Captain.

Captain's Corner

While Lent is commonly associated with abstaining from indulgences, its essence extends beyond mere fasting. And while fasting and abstinence from certain foods are an important part of our lent traditions there are also two other, often forgotten aspects that the Catholic Church teaches us to take into consideration. One such is prayer. Prayer is a way for us to spend time with God. It is a way for us to connect with Him and align our hearts with His. When we pray, we are inviting God into our lives and asking for His guidance. And if you're anything like me, you need His guidance every day.
The other often forgotten part of Lent, is almsgiving. During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on almsgiving, which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing various other acts of charity, whether that be out in public, at school or even at home is entirely up to you. Lent gives us the opportunity to cultivate a spirit of generosity. And it gives us a chance to share what we have and who we are with other people through almsgiving.
So let us collectively make this year our best Lent yet, through our fortitude and prayers. I invite you to try going to mass and confession with greater regularity and also to join our Stations of the Cross, which will be taking place every Friday during Lent at lunchtime, 1:15 pm in the chapel, all students and staff are welcome.

My name is Soji Joseph, and I recently joined Wollemi at the beginning of this year as a teacher of Science and Computing for secondary classes. Let me share a bit about myself. I am fortunate to have a wonderful family; I've been happily married to Simi for the past 17 years, and together we are blessed with five beautiful children. While two of our boys attend Wollemi, our three girls are enrolled at Montgrove School.
My roots trace back to Kerala, a southern state in India, where I completed my school education and earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Additionally, I pursued a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications and resided in Bangalore, India, for a few years. Simi and I tied the knot in 2007, and shortly after, we embarked on a new chapter in New Zealand, where we settled for about 12 years. During our time there, I obtained my teaching qualifications from the University of Auckland and taught Mathematics at state schools for high school classes.
In 2019, we made the decision to embrace Australian life, and we relocated to Shepparton in Victoria. In the past five years, I taught Mathematics and Religious Education at a Catholic secondary school in Shepparton until our family decided to join the Pared family this year.
While my Catholic faith and family hold immense significance in my life, I also find joy in gardening, fishing, and exploring new destinations through travel. As a teacher at Wollemi, I firmly believe that within each individual lies the potential to excel. It is my responsibility to identify and nurture that potential in my students, fostering an environment where they can grow and flourish.

Year 2 Father and Son Camp
The Year 2 Father and Son Camp took place on February 10th-11th at Blue Gum Lodge, Springwood. The weekend brought fathers and sons together for unforgettable moments of bonding, sports, prayer, and adventure.
The Saturday began with overly competitive team sports like basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and tennis, testing the over-competitive nature of many fathers and sons. Mr. Breen led a touching rosary under the starry night, followed by a magical evening of roasting s'mores by a large campfire.
Father Anthony led prayer with daily masses, providing moments of reflection amidst the weekend's adventures. An arduous bushwalk to the creek brought challenges for many boys (and dads) like steep cliffs, a creek crossing, and a surprise encounter with over 100 leeches who feasted on our blood – a true test of endurance.
Separate father and son talks and quiet time around the Lodge provided opportunities for open conversations, strengthening the bond between dads and their young ones. The weekend was highlighted by an amazing dads' evening BBQ, organized by Mr. Camilleri, bringing together conversation, tasty marinated meat, and some dads busting out the tunes on guitars.
The first day brought a surprise visit from paramedics, tending to an injured dad who soldiered on through the weekend in a sling. In a quirky twist on Sunday morning, an unconfirmed world record was set for the longest time a fat, hungry leech clung to a dad's leg – from breakfast through to lunch!
The Year 2 Father and Son Camp at Blue Gum Lodge was a tremendous success, creating lasting memories and strengthening the bonds within our Year 2 cohort. A huge thank you to Mr. Breen for organising and leading the camp and to all dads and sons who made the camp such a great experience.
Nathan Quan, Year 2B Teacher and Dad
Year 7 Father and Son Camp
As with every F&S Camp I have attended, this one filled me with just as much anticipation and excitement as all others (and I have been to a few already).
Blue Gum Lodge is one of our regular destinations. The camp was well attended and we enjoyed making the acquaintance of a number of new dads and sons. We have been blessed with great weather to start Saturday off. We enjoyed indoor basketball, volleyball, touch footy and cricket. And the warm weather allowed us to finish the afternoon with a splash in the pool.
The dad‘s talk gave all of us insight into improving our relationship with our sons and I learned new things in our discussion groups. A thunderstorm came through the lower mountains late in the afternoon but that did not ‘dampen’ our spirits and the decision was made to proceed with the rosary at the campfire site. Although it took a while to get the fire going, we were able to say the rosary and the boys got to enjoy some roasted marshmallows.
The day was capped off with a wonderful nighttime dad’s barbecue, a tradition for the evening get-together. We also had the experience of setting off a smoke alarm caused by the barbecue and were visited by the local Fire Brigade who literally received a hero's welcome.
Sunday began with good weather again and we were able to have our bushwalk. We were kept on our toes with the abundance of leeches, ready to pounce on anything that moved. We then cooled off with another swim in the pool.
It was a great father-and-son camp. Thank you to Jack & Martin for organising, thanks also to Gerard and David who have helped keep it going smoothly, to Fr Anthony for celebrating our Masses and to Blue Gum Lodge.
Alan Soriano, Year 7 dad
Year 12 Seminar
Last Monday and Tuesday, the Year 12 class took a hard-earned break from their vigorous studies as they trekked up to Blue Gum Lodge in the Blue Mountains for their seminar. In preparation for the HSC, the boys learnt about various methods and techniques that they could use in order to finish their secondary studies strongly. Along with this, we learnt about how God could accompany us in our final years of studies, as well as what life after school may look like for us.
Talks were given by a variety of people, from teachers such as Mr Ramos, Mr Johnson, Mr Wright and Mr Burffitt, to outside speakers from Elevate Education and the legendary Dave Brebner. What was definitely most enjoyable for the boys was using the facilities provided by Blue Gum in order to, as Mr Wright would put it, “Muck around with your mates and do stupid stuff.” The boys played 8 ball pool, table tennis, foosball, tennis, and 11 v 11 basketball games. And of course, it wouldn’t have been worth getting that sweaty if they didn’t get a chance to take a plunge in the pool, which is exactly what we did.
All in all, the seminar was a great experience for the class of 2024, where I’m sure some lasting memories (or nightmares) were made. Thank you again to the school for organising this opportunity, as well as Mr Wright for accompanying us during our stay and surprisingly keeping a pack of 30 teenage boys under control.

General Notices
From the Deputy

Term 1 Week 4 Blitz
Welcome to Week 4. With just over a third of this term behind us, I hope your son has settled into the routine and structure of home and school. If your son is having difficulties adjusting to the demands and rigour of school and homework, be sure to reach out to his mentor to workshop some strategies and tips to help him function to the best of his ability.
Each week, Wollemi focuses on specific elements of student personal excellence through identifying compliance or noncompliance of the school’s expectations. The focus, or as we call it, the Blitz for this week is on summer shirts, sports uniform and school shoes.
While we will be rewarding consistent student compliance, you will receive notification if your son does not comply with the school’s uniform policy. We appreciate your cooperation with this request. Please see the information below regarding the school’s expectations regarding this week’s Blitz.
The correct school short-sleeved shirt is to be worn - this is the shirt with the Wollemi Crest on the front pocket - shirts with the green and blue stripes on the front pocket are no longer permitted.
Boys are to wear black leather school shoes. Black canvas, suede or black sneakers are not permitted.
Boys are to wear their full sports uniform on the days they have PDHPE - boys are to bring their house shirts in their bags and wear their blue polo to and from school.
Next week’s Blitz (Week 5) will focus on Hats and Hair. Please be sure to check your son’s diary for the school’s expectations on haircuts and wearing hats.
With increased congestion during afternoon pick-up, we ask that you adhere to the following request:
If you drive home using the Great Western Highway, instead of turning right onto Werrington Rd, please turn left and then use the roundabout to head back towards the Great Western Highway.
For other pick-up suggestions, please email scottwilliamson@wollemi.nsw.edu.au
Scott Williamson, Deputy Headmaster
Car Line Pick-up
The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount importance at Wollemi. As you would appreciate, with the commencement of a new school term, and the continued growth of the school population, the volume of traffic in and around the College has increased during afternoon pick-up. As a result of this, we have taken some measures to improve the parking at the College with the expansion of the overflow car park. To help ensure the effective flow of traffic and the safety of our Wollemi community, I take this opportunity to remind you of the College’s pick-up procedures.
Main Carpark (inside the College)
1. Entry into the school is via the second gate only.
2. Students are only to be collected in the green pick-up area (see diagram above)
3. The curb by the buildings is set down and pick up only (noted in green) – no parking. Do not alight from the right-hand side of cars in the set-down lane. Please be especially vigilant that children ONLY alight on the left.
4. Please do not double park in the set-down lane but wait for space to be available on the curb.
5. Please remain in your vehicle until your son arrives.
6. To ensure traffic flow and maximize space, when waiting in the carline to collect your son/s, please make sure you move to the front of the line or fill any empty space available along the pickup area.
Please watch for young students crossing on the pedestrian crossing from the school veranda entrance to the carpark.
Overflow car park (outside the school)
7. Students are only to be collected in the green pickup area (see diagram above)
8. Please Park only in the designated parking bays - as noted in yellow on the diagram
IMPORTANT NOTES
Please ensure your son knows which carpark he will be picked up from in the afternoon.
To further assist with the flow of traffic and to reduce parent wait time in the car line, please remind your son/s that they must be watchful at this time for the approach of your vehicle on Gipps Rd so that they can be ready for collection.
We hope that these measures will help allow traffic within the College to flow more effectively and reduce traffic congestion whilst ensuring student safety. We appreciate that the afternoon pickup period can be busy, and we ask that we continue to be patient and courteous to each other.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
- The diagram pictured clearly outlines the traffic flow procedures for student collection points at the College and indicates the no parking areas. The key points to note about each car park are: No parking on Gipps Rd (noted in red)
School Times
The school gates will be opened at 8:15 am and students are not allowed onto the school premises before this time unless there are co-curricular commitments. If you are dropping your child/ren off before 8.15 am, please remind them that they are to stay outside the gates until it is opened.
A reminder that when collecting your child/ren parents can either:
- Park their car in the outside car park and walk into the school/pedestrian gate to pick up their child
- Use the car line process where your child will come to the car.
To help with the flow of the carline and traffic in the area we kindly ask that:
- If you are using the car line, we ask parents to not exit the car.
- Please collect your child/children from 3.25 pm and 3.45 pm when Teacher supervision ends.
- Reminder parents NOT to park along Gipps Rd in the afternoon as it causes congestion and risks the safety of our students.
Student Attendance
Start of School Day
Classes commence at 8:40 am each day. All boys are expected to be at school before this time.
Supervision for students will be provided at the school from 8:15 am each day. Students will not be admitted to the school until this time.
End of the School Day
The school will conclude for ALL students at 3:25 pm.
Late to School
If your son is late to school, he is required to sign in at the Front Office BEFORE moving to class.
Early Leave
If your son needs to leave school early due to an appointment, parents/guardians must notify the College either by submitting an Early Departure Student Daybook in the Parent Portal. Before leaving campus, your son must report to the Front Office to sign out. If you are collecting your son from the College, he is to be collected from the Front Office and not the classroom or other school areas.
Absence from School
If your son is absent from school, we ask you to complete the form “Wollemi Absentee Form” from the Parental Portal on Engage PRIOR to the commencement of the school day.
Term 1 Mentor Meeting
As you are aware, parent mentor meetings are a crucial element of how Wollemi assists parents in their primary role as educators of their sons. Meeting with your mentor once a term is part of your commitment to the school enrolment and it is a great way to share in the development of your son’s character.
To facilitate bookings for parent-mentor meetings, a document has been attached via the link below outlining all mentors’ availability this term. You just need to click on your mentor's link and schedule a date and time that suits you. We encourage you to book a meeting with your mentor as early as convenient so that you and your mentor can work together on your son’s development.
PARENT MENTOR MEETINGS 2024
(Your mentors’ details can be found on your parent portal under “student details” in the field named “additional tutors”. Here is a quick tutorial on navigating the parent portal. https://sites.google.com/pared.edu.au/engageparentportalresources/viewing-student-details)
Should you require any assistance to book your parent-mentor meeting, do not hesitate to contact either Mrs Reid (nancy.reid@wollemi.nsw.edu.au) or myself.

Signing in for Mass Attendance
It has been great to see an increased number of students coming to daily Mass at School, so that our chapel is almost full everyday. Parents are welcome to attend Mass with their sons, either on the set day in Primary or on any day their Secondary sons choose to attend. Unfortunately, as the space in the chapel is very limited, we are unable to offer daily Mass to parents as a regular alternative to their local parishes. We also ask that any parents attending Holy Mass please sign in at the Front Office.
