From the Headmaster

Almost there! There is a lot of hard work going on at Wollemi during these final weeks of term. We have had our Year 7-10 End of Year Exams, Year 12 Assessments, and ‘tying a bow’ around the academic year from our Primary boys. Our resident artists and musicians showed off their talents during WOLCAN last Friday, and we all enjoyed the culinary skills of so many parent volunteers before the concert. Finally, the Year 10 boys shone during their Service Project in the South Coast, and I encourage you to read their account below, as well as the feedback we received from the local community there. What a finish from our boys. Well done!
As mentioned on the phone this afternoon, I would like to commend the students who attended Goodwin residential age care facility “The Glen” at Catalina.
My 92-year-old mother-in-law (Rita Karlson) is a resident at The Glen and was thrilled to tell me about a group of young men from a school who participated in work experience.
As Rita’s face lit up, she expressed how well-mannered, hard-working, helpful and happy these young men were. Rita loved the karaoke, and dance moves and mentioned she hadn’t enjoyed Bingo as much! I believe they also worked in the kitchen and laundry facilities.
One particular lad (unfortunately Rita can’t remember his name) asked if he could visit her before they left to say goodbye. Rita was thrilled when he and 6 other lads visited her in her room which made her day. They took some photos and if I can retrieve them from her iPad I will forward them to you.
Rita and I would like to thank Wollemi College for this great initiative and for allowing students to experience life in an aged care facility. Your students are an asset to your College so a huge congratulations to all involved. A special thank you to the lads for putting a huge smile on Rita’s face (which is no easy feat) ha ha !!!
Kind regards, Jill Karlson
The last three weeks of the year we will focus on the virtue of gratitude at Wollemi. Firstly as a Christian virtue. I presented to our students various instances from the Gospels where Jesus points out a lack of gratitude; not for his own sake, but knowing it makes us better when we practise this virtue.
Secondly, as a human virtue, we are encouraging our students to use gratitude as an antidote for selfishness and a certain entitled attitude that can sadly prevail in our culture today, and that is utterly unattractive.
Finally, from a practical perspective, people are more inclined to help us when we do not take them for granted.
I am hoping to see many expressions of gratitude among our students as the year draws to a close, not least the effort to continue with their upstanding attitude and effort right to the last day.
Congratulations to Dhanvin M (Year 10) for winning the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme Scholarship, and on his training sea voyage down the South Coast. Well done also to our Primary Rugby players on their recent success at the Arndell Cup. See the full details below.

From the Chaplain

This Sunday 3 we will start Advent, a time of prayer and penance to prepare for the birth of Our Lord.
And on the last days of this academic year, we will live the Novena to the Immaculate Conception: the nine days leading up to the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on December 8.
How good to get ready for Christmas with Our Lady! She will help us to take care of the baby Jesus and to adore Him with Joseph, the Angels, the Shepherds and the three Wise Men.
From the Head of Primary

With the end of term in sight, Wollemi Primary is still all systems go! With the Primary Semester 2 reports almost finalised, our dedicated staff is busily engaging the boys with end of year learning tasks and keeping their academic brains ticking.
I have two heartwarming stories to share with you. Our incredibly talented Primary Captain, Elijah Baird approached me earlier in the term with a proposal to serve our local community by engaging with the residents in aged care. Elijah’s idea was to send a personalised Christmas card to people in nursing homes. Elijah and our Primary Vice Captain, Ferdinand, with my guidance, called two local nursing homes and shared their idea with the Lifestyle coordinators. To say they were delighted and supportive of this amazing initiative is an understatement. Within a day, we received a list of names in readiness for the Year 4, 5 and 6 students to write a personalised Christmas card. Years 2 and 3 were responsible for supplying a sweet to be inserted into each card. As we have come to expect, the Wollemi community has supported this initiative and donated many chocolates for the residents in the nursing homes to enjoy. A huge thank you to Elijah and Ferdinand for this incredible initiative, Mrs and Mrs Baird for donating all of the Christmas cards and to the Year 2 and 3 parents for the generous donations of sweets. I know there will be many happy people in Boronia House and Heritage Care nursing homes.
The next heartwarming news is about our amazing staff member in our Diverse Learning team, Mrs Keskar. Mrs Keskar started with us at the beginning of Term 3 and made an immediate impact on the staff and students. Mrs Keskar has a genuine care for our boys and every student in her care speaks very fondly of her engaging activities and nurturing character. We are very lucky to have Mrs Keskar as part of our team. At last Friday’s assembly, Mrs Keskar recited a poem she had composed about the boys with whom she works. Please see Mrs Keskar’s poem below.
SHINING STAR
The whole year you have worked so hard
Now, look at you shining like a star.
You deserve everything under the sun
Don’t forget all the diverse learning fun.
Thanks for all your stories and laughs
Oh, look there’s a giraffe!
Just making sure you are paying attention
Please applaud the boys I’m about to mention.
They all did their best work indeed
I’m so proud of what they have achieved.
Holidays are nearly here
Enjoy them and I will see you next year.
Captain's Corner

This week at Wollemi, we have been exploring the great and indispensable virtue that is GRATITUDE. Much can be said on this topic, but I’ll emulate the great JC and stick to a parable, or a metaphor of sorts. To do so, I once again have gleaned the deep reservoirs of wisdom from “the” unnamed teacher (dad joke extraordinaire) and found a pearl!
This unnamed teacher (for brevity purposes, I’ll use the pseudonym “Mr Rite”), has an endearing name for our beloved Mr Vassallo, namely V8. For those who know a little about Mr Vassallo, this name is very apt. Just like a V8, Mr Vassallo is fast, tough, reliable and always makes you smile. In fact, I would liken him to a twin-turbocharged screamer that is the McLaren 600LT. If you want something done and done fast, Mr Vassallo is the man for the job.
Just like the V8, Mr Vassallo has seen us through some tough times and has genuinely become an integral part of the Wollemi fabric. So it was with great sadness and gratitude in our hearts that we celebrated our final assembly with him last week. On behalf of the whole school community, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for always steering us in the right direction.
This week the Year 7-9’s are participating in Activities Week which aims at developing their character and giving back to the community. It’s an opportunity to slow down from the noise of the modern world which oftentimes makes us deaf to the voice of God. I am sure that I am not the only one who recently has had to traverse a minefield of Black Friday emails trying to convince me that the geometric potted cactus that I just have to have for my life to be meaningful is now at a whopping 30% off.
During this Advent season, I invite you to imitate the great St Francis and lead “a cheerful, happy revolt against the spirit of materialism”. Better yet, adopt the guerilla warfare tactic of taking just one day a week to enjoy life with God, who offers everything that materialism promises but can never deliver on- contentment. Where you put your resources (including money and time) is where you put your heart. It is the steering wheel to your engine of desire!

Wollemi Man Award

Congratulations to Benedict Cabrera (Year 11) who was presented with the Wollemi Man Award at our Secondary Assembly in Week 7 of this term.
Benedict was awarded this accolade as he embodies our School’s focus on a ‘Culture of Excellence’. He has demonstrated consistent application and effort across all areas of school life. Within the classroom, Benedict has distinguished himself as a dedicated and hardworking student, who engages well with his learning. All teachers speak highly of his approach to his studies and has achieved excellent results across the board. Beyond the classroom, Benedict is an excellent role model. He leads by example in his actions and deeds. He is always courteous and shows respect for others. Benedict actively participates in the co-curricular life of the school. He has particularly distinguished himself on the basketball court. Benedict was the Captain of the U18 Wollemi Warlocks and led them to the Divisions 3 Championship at the end of last term; leading from the front and with great fortitude.
Benedict is an all-rounder and a worthy recipient of the Wollemi Man Award. Congratulations, Benedict. Benedict will receive a Certificate of Recognition, 25 House Points for Araluen and a $20 gift voucher courtesy of Caddens Woolworths.
Well Done, Benedict.
Rugby Gala Day
Last Tuesday (21st November) we brought boys from Years 3-6 to Arndell Anglican College to participate in a Rugby Gala Day. Two of our teams participated in the Year 3/4 group, and one team participated in the Year 5/6 group.
It was great to see several schools come together to put on a fun day of rugby for the boys! I was very proud to see how all our boys did! Our Year 5/6 team played tough until the very last whistle. In my opinion, we had the best athletes of any of the schools by far. Sometimes that ball just doesn't bounce your way.
One of our Year 3/4 teams was able to make it to the grand final to play St John's XXIII. Happy to say that after a hard-fought game, our boys pulled out the win! It was very satisfying, as that St John team had beaten us the previous 3 times we played them. Including in the grand final at our first gala day at William Clarke. It just goes to show that just like in life, sometimes you lose you lose and you lose. You don't give up, you keep pushing forward, and eventually, you win!
Thank you to all the parents for trusting us to teach the game safely, and thanks to all the players for their hard work and dedication! Hope to see more players come out and learn the game next year!

Year 5 Fun Day/Evening
Year 5 embarked on an action-packed Fun Day and Evening to end an amazing year. The day began with a 'short' walk down the Fairy Dell Track, and another 'short' walk to Springwood Aquatic Centre for a well-earned swim led by Mr Quan, Mr Baxter, Mr Wright, Mr Pacquing and Mrs Zinghini. The evening kicked off with a delicious BBQ, campfire and marshmallow roasting session prepared by Mr Williamson and ended with some sporting activities and a wind-down movie with the assistance of Mr Pacquing, Mr Wright, Mrs Zinghini and Mr Tolentino.
The highlights of the 12-hour long day were definitely the 30,000-plus steps recorded on Sime's Fitness Tracker, learning to start a fire by building a teepee of kindling that was collected by students and getting melted marshmallows stuck on the soles of our shoes as we roasted S'mores over the fire.
A big shout out goes to Mr Tolentino who helped out with the evening session until 8:30pm despite the imminent birth of baby Layla and WOLCAN preparation for the following night. Dedication and commitment!
A tiring bushwalk, followed by a well-earned swim and some time at Buttenshaw Park. What a day! But that wasn't all - returning to Wollemi, lighting a fire, roasting marshmallows, and getting involved in more sports until 8:30 pm. So tiring! - Elias
Our invigorating adventure included a scorching bushwalk, a refreshing swim, a chill ride on an old train, a tasty sausage sizzle and more sports. This Fun Day was the best out of all. - Lucas
Year 10 Work Placement Program
3 of our Year 10 Students participated in the recent Health Inspirations Program last month. According to Natalie Boncales, Acting Aboriginal Employment Coordinator| NBMLHD| Diversity and Inclusion at Nepean Hospital, Adam L., Dhanvin M. and Steven M. ( Year 10 students) were fantastic students who were engaged, always volunteering and asked heaps of questions. Nepean Health enjoyed having the boys at the program and look forward to having our students again next year.
Year 10 Service Work Camp

What an incredible week in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia! Last week, Year 10 set sail for the sunny South Coast of NSW. The reason for our week-long absence? The Year 12 Service Camp!
With Tuross Head as our base, we drove up to Bateman’s Bay each day and split the class into two smaller groups. One group spent their time at The Manor retirement village. The other group spent their week at The Glen. Both retirement villages were run by Goodwin Aged Care Services.
Those three days were filled with everything you can imagine that goes on in a retirement village. The boys got stuck in cooking, serving food, cleaning, chatting with residents, walking with residents, gardening, landscaping, helping with appliance maintenance, rubbish disposal, refurbishing some residents’ houses…the list goes on!
As a teacher, I was extremely proud with how our boys conducted themselves. If there was a job to be done, there was no hesitation. Hands went up and it was done. Most pleasing was seeing the sheer joy and jubilation many of the residents received from spending time in extended conversation with the boys. Many of the boys will not realise the impact their visit had on these retirees, but I will finish by leaving below a lovely email we received from the manager at Goodwin. The boys were a credit to themselves, the school and most importantly, their families and faith.
---------------------------
Hi Bernard,
I wanted to ensure you were aware how much of an uplift the past 3 day have been for my residents.
Your Wollemi College year 10 group made quite an impression, not only on my residents but also on my team.
There were several residents a little teary this afternoon as you all drove off.
I want to congratulate the young men on the interest they showed in my residents, in their interests and in what they did in their lives before retiring to The Manor.
I want to praise them for their courteous and well-mannered behaviour during their visit, this behaviour was plain to see when engaging with residents and staff alike and has been commented on and passed along to me several times.
Finally, I want to commend them for their obvious empathy and congratulate their parents and the college for instilling this in them.
Well done to yourself and Jack as well for ensuring it all ran smoothly moving between tasks and locations and helping to keep them all fed.
Please make certain to pass my comments along to your Head of school and as many of the young men’s parents as possible.
You and they are welcome back to Goodwin anytime.
Brett
Congratulations!

2023 WOLCAN: A Celebration of Diversity, Talent, and Creativity

The grounds of our school recently resonated with the sounds of joy, rhythm, and cultural diversity during the much-anticipated event, WOLCAN. This celebration, held on a memorable November evening, proved to be a resounding success, bringing together students, staff, and parents in a showcase of the school's vibrant community spirit.
One of the standout features of WOLCAN was the mouthwatering array of culinary delights from around the world. Food stalls representing diverse cultures, including Indian, Spanish, and Filipino cuisines, offered a gourmet journey for attendees. The aromas of exotic spices and the sizzling sounds of various delicacies filled the air, creating an atmosphere that celebrated the rich tapestry of global flavours.
The heart of WOLCAN, however, was the spectacular performances that spanned the entire spectrum of artistic expression. From the youngest talents in Year 2 to the seasoned performers in Year 12, students took centre stage to showcase their skills. The event featured a mesmerizing array of singing, instrumental solos, dancing, and poetry recitations, highlighting the depth of talent within our school community.
The art displays were another highlight, highlighting the creative prowess of both primary and secondary students. The walk-through gallery, in particular, was a visual feast, displaying works of art from graduating art and design students. The walls were adorned with a kaleidoscope of colours, themes, and mediums, providing a captivating journey through the minds of these accomplished artists.
The inclusivity of WOLCAN was evident not only in the diversity of cultural offerings but also in the variety of performances and art forms represented. The event truly underscored the school's commitment to fostering an environment where every student, regardless of age or background, could shine. The event not only provided a platform for displaying talent but also fostered a sense of community and pride in the school's rich cultural tapestry. WOLCAN has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the school's cultural calendar. It not only celebrated diversity but also provided a stage for the flourishing talents of our students. As the echoes of laughter and applause fade away, the memories of WOLCAN will linger, a testament to the vibrant and creative spirit that defines our school community.
Mark Ranftl, Head of Music
Thank You!

A big thank you to the WOLCAN Committee, led by Mark Ranftl, Luke Baxter, Mike Tolentino, and Camille Wiggins, who worked diligently leading up to ensure the event's success.

Class of 2013 Ten-Year Reunion
Last Saturday, most of the class of 2013 returned to Wollemi, some for the first time since graduating, for a bbq to celebrate their ten-year reunion. It was great to catch up with the boys and see how they have established themselves. They are lawyers, plumbers, seminarians, teachers, and train guards; some are married, most are single; but they all have very fond memories of their time here, and they obviously enjoyed catching up with each other, their former teachers and their first Headmaster.
I'd like to thank Brendan Williams and Ryan Pauling whose chance meeting and subsequent organisation led to this great afternoon of reminiscing.
