From the Headmaster

Month of November
On my way to school this morning I noticed a witch waiting at a set of lights to cross the road. This reminded me, not so much of the American custom of dressing up and ‘trick-or-treating’, as the fact that tomorrow is the feast of All Saints, All Hallows in the church old calendar, which gave the name to the current Halloween. We will kick off the month of November with a whole school Mass on 1 November, to which you are all invited. We follow this up with All Souls on 2 November, a day when we remember all the faithful departed. For the rest of the month, as has been Church tradition for many centuries, we encourage our students, in age-appropriate ways and often through the mentor system, to pray for those who have gone before us, in our families, in the broader school and Pared communities and even across time and space. As St Josemaria wrote in The Way (#571):
“The holy souls in purgatory. Out of charity, out of justice, and out of excusable selfishness — they have such power with God! — remember them often in your sacrifices and in your prayers.
May you be able to say when you speak of them, 'My good friends the souls in purgatory.'
Praying for Peace in the Holy Land
This special intention for the month of November does not take away our continuous prayer for Peace in the Holy Land. We have now had two special Day of Fasting and Prayer, on 17 October, as requested by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, and last Friday, as requested by the Pope. We will continue to support with our prayers our brothers and sisters suffering in the Holy Land, and continue to pray for a resolution to the conflict.
World Teachers Day
On a more positive note, we managed to combine prayer and fasting with joy and celebration last Friday, as we thanked our teachers for the wonderful job that they do. Some teachers responded to the challenge of dressing up as their teachers once did: dress shorts, long shorts and appropriately 70s shirts and ties. The Year 12 also accepted the challenge of dressing as their favourite current teacher, with some wonderfully comic interpretations. The teachers were also treated to a special lunch, but my highlight was watching teachers read the special thank-you cards that Mrs Wiggins coordinated, full of heartfelt messages from their students. At Wollemi, we often speak to our boys about the importance of the virtue of gratitude, and last Friday our boys came through!
Around the Grounds
Last week we hosted our Term 4 Open Day. This day was extremely well attended by more than 100 people. This has already led to many applications for our increasingly scarce available spots at the College. Many thanks to the Pared Marketing Department for their help on the day, and the many student tour guides, who are by far and away our best promoters of our school.
Last weekend we hosted our Year 8 Father Son Camp at Point Wolstoncroft. Year 8 marks the end of the Father-Son Camp journey for our boys at Wollemi and for some of the dads. Thank you not only for your commitment and attendance to the past weekend’s Father and Son camp but for so many of these gatherings over the years. For those without younger sons, it was the end of an era, and we really appreciate the sacrifices, the less-than-optimal sleeps and the sore muscles afterwards that often go with Father-Son camps. We know, as you do, that they are worthwhile investments in your son, and in the community immediately around him, and we thank you for your various contributions over the years. Well done dads!

From the Chaplain
In the homily of the Mass of the conclusion of the Synod of Bishops, Pope Francis gave us the key points to reform the Church:
“We may have plenty of good ideas on how to reform the Church, but let us remember: to adore God and to love our brothers and sisters with his love, that is the great and perennial reform. To be a worshipping Church and a Church of service, washing the feet of wounded humanity, accompanying those who are frail, weak and cast aside, going out lovingly to encounter the poor”.
Let’s foster adoration to the Blessed Sacrament: at Wollemi, we have a solemn one on the First Fridays. And every day the students, teachers and parents can come to the chapel to adore God in the Tabernacle. We put in God’s hands our intentions, and pray for the peace in Holy Land and Ukraine.
That’s what the Pope wants for the Church:
“May the Church adore: in every diocese, in every parish, in every community, let us adore the Lord! Only in this way will we turn to Jesus and not to ourselves. For only through silent adoration will the Word of God live in our words; only in his presence will we be purified, transformed and renewed by the fire of his Spirit. Brothers and sisters, let us adore the Lord Jesus!”.
November will help us to look up, to remember that Heaven is our real homeland! And we will help Our Lady to empty the Purgatory.

From the Head of Primary

In what is another rapidly moving term, Wollemi Primary has many exciting adventures ahead!
Next week, Year 6 head to the Nation’s Capital on a 3-day camp where they will participate in an incredible amount of fun-filled and engaging learning activities. They will visit the Royal Australian Mint, The Australian War Memorial, Government House, the National Electorate Centre, the National Museum, Questacon, Mt Ainslie, a night tour of the Dinosaur Museum, the House of Representatives and Senate, Old Parliament House and the Museum of Australian Democracy! All of that in just three days sounds incredibly exciting and tiring! I know the teachers and students will have an amazing time. Look out for later editions of the newsletter for post-camp recounts by our Year 6 reporters.
Unfortunately, we will not be holding a Year 5 Camp as planned this term; however, the boys will not miss out on fun and adventure. In place of the camp, the students will travel to Springwood via the train and embark on a nature walk. After a beautiful stroll amongst Australia’s natural landscape, the boys will cool off with a swim at Springwood Aquatic Centre. Once their aquatic needs have been met, they will travel back to Wollemi where the fun continues. Mr Quan and Mr Younes will have a variety of fun afternoon games and activities for the boys to play before they enjoy a well-deserved sausage sizzle. The action doesn’t stop there! After a scrumptious meal, weather permitting, the boys will enjoy time around a campfire roasting marshmallows and learning how to make ‘smores! There will be specific information and permission forms coming your way soon!
Captain's Corner

My thanks go to the staff and students for giving me the opportunity to take up the mantle of Vice Captain alongside Peter, our School Captain, as well as House Captains Madhav, Sebastian, Petelo and William. I look forward to working with the 2024 Leadership team in my tenure at Wollemi.
Last Friday we had the opportunity to celebrate and recognize our wonderful teachers here at Wollemi for the incredible role they play in shaping the future for us boys. A few of our Year 12 students had us seeing double as they came dressed to school looking eerily similar to the teachers we know and love. Particular mention goes to Joseph Gaid and his full trench coat look (aka Mr Weber) and Ekshvaak for his polished suit and tie ensemble (a clone for Mr Ranftl).
In honour of World Teacher’s Day, I wanted to avail you of just one daily “delight” we experience here as students courtesy of our teachers, or should I say teacher. This teacher, who shall remain unnamed, likes to regale us with his vault of dad jokes. They are too good to be kept hidden, so I thought I would share one of his all-time favourites with you.
SON: Dad, do you know what an eclipse is?
DAD: No Son!
When I got home, I shared the joke with my dad, to which he quickly retorted with:
“How did the sun cut his hair?”
Eclipse it!
Moving along. One of the upcoming initiatives spearheaded by the SRC Team is the St Vincent De Paul Appeal for the Homeless. This initiative focuses on aiding the homeless in our own backyard, whilst also uniting Wollemi as a community with a common goal: to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbour as oneself.
The Vinnies Appeal is a perfect opportunity to carry out Jesus’ message in Matthew 25:40, “Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”. As we approach the end of the term, filled with activities, exams, assignments and a demand on our time and energy, my prayer for our community here at Wollemi is that we constantly remind ourselves of the God who goes before us, a merciful, strength-giving Father who empowers us to not only persevere through each day but to walk in joy, freedom and fearlessness enabling us to go from strength to strength. With this in mind, we can lock into these last few weeks with the goal to fight through and win all our battles for God’s glory.

Year 3 Excursion Scenic World
A big thank you to Mr Ramos for accompanying us on our excursions, as well as the lovely mums who attended - Mrs Lee, Mrs Cook, Mrs Spiteri and Mrs Tu'ipulotu! Thank you also to Mr Breen and Mrs Keskar for helping us out on the day!
Sam Tu'ipulotu, 3B Teacher
--------------------
On Thursday, 19/10/23, Year 3 and I went on an excursion to Scenic World. At about 8:45 to 9:00 we boarded the bus. On the bus, I was sitting next to Kristofer.
When we got to Scenic World, we went on the world's steepest railway. On the railway, we went but it wasn't even that scary! After that, we went to the Scenic World’s rainforest. We saw a coal mine, dinos and even more dinos!
After the bushwalk, we went on a cable car. After the cable car, we had recess. We played some games, and ate lots of food. After recess, we went on a bushwalk. We saw some spectacular sights such as the Three Sisters. After that we went back to Wollemi. We had a great time.

Meet the Teacher
This term, we have been fortunate enough to have Mr Wright (junior version) completing his teaching placement in Year 5 Blue. Mr Wright has enjoyed his time here with us so much that he has decided to also complete his 6-week Internship in the class for the rest of the year. Here are a few messages the class had to say about our time so far with him:
"Mr Wright makes understanding our learning simpler" - Andrei
"Mr Wright is the right teacher for us" - Alex
"He is kind, generous and patient" - Elias and Joseph
"He uses many calming brain breaks" - Isaac
"He is a great teacher for many students" - Lucas and Joel
"He is willing to teach us any time" - Mahiwal
"He is a young and intelligent teacher with a bright future" - Kevin
"He is fun" - Novy
Here is a little Meet the Teacher to introduce him to the school community despite already being like part of the furniture here at Wollemi College.
Mr Quan, Mr Wright and Year 5 Blue
Year 8 Father & Son Camp
Father & Son camps have been a great tradition at Wollemi College since the beginning, but this one was special, as the Year 8s had their last Father and Son camp last weekend.
It was a small but fantastic group of dads that came together back again and got involved in all the activities that the camp had to offer. From bike riding to sailing, we all had a ball. Their attendance to the camp was a great testimony to their commitment to the school, but most importantly a showcase of their dedication to develop that connection with their sons at this difficult age - when teenagers don't want much to do with their dads.
But since the Father and Son camps are not only about spending time with your son, but also spending time with the other dads, the evening dad's get-together last Saturday was an awesome way to enjoy each other's company. Thank you to Ivan Bastac and George Elias and all the dads who cooked a nice BBQ that allowed us to have a great chat until late.
A big Thank you to Fr Anthony who came to say Mass for us both days, and to the mentors who made an appearance. Finally, a big Thank you to Vasco Gil for leading the dad's discussion on how to help our boys to develop a healthy and responsible social life. It was great to hear everyone's experiences after 8 years of being at Wollemi.
Wollemi Man Award

Congratulations to Elias Fakhry (Year 9) who was presented with the Wollemi Man Award at our Term 4 Week 3 Secondary School Assembly.
Elias was awarded this accolade for the compassion and generosity he has demonstrated towards others. Elias has freely given up his time to share his talents to assist others to develop and grow. Each week, Elias dedicates his free time to mentor a gifted mathematician in Year 5. Despite the demands of high school, Elias's unwavering commitment shines through as he selflessly imparts his knowledge and enthusiasm for numbers to the eager, younger mind. Their weekly sessions are a testament to the power of mentorship, fostering not only mathematical prowess but also the enduring values of empathy and generosity. Elias’s sense of service also extends beyond the classroom environment. At our recent Year 9 Ski Camp, Elias, who is a proficient skier, took the time to assist less able and slower skiers; skiing alongside them offering encouragement and advice along the way. This type of selflessness and thinking of others are key virtues we aspire all of our Wollemi men to demonstrate.
Congratulations Elias. Elias will receive a Certificate of Recognition, 25 House Points for his House and a $20 gift voucher courtesy of Caddens Woolworths.
Well done Elias.

Solemnity of All Saints Whole School Mass
Next Wednesday 1st of November, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints. This Solemnity is a day for honouring all men and women who have entered and are enjoying the glory of Heaven. While this includes every soul in Heaven, the focus is particularly on those saints who led holy lives on earth, but they don't have a specific Saint Day.
At Wollemi, we love promoting the Universal Call to Holiness, and explaining to the boys that we should all aim for "ordinary holiness", that is, trying to be the best version of ourselves, by loving God and others and doing our everyday duties well. For this reason, next Wednesday we will have a Whole School Mass to help our students raise their eyes to Heaven and reflect on this beautiful call we all have.
We would like to extend an invitation to parents to attend Whole School Mass for the Solemnity of All Saints on Wednesday 1 November at the College, which will begin at 10.10 a.m. and conclude at approximately 11.00 a.m.
To assist us with the logistics for the day, could you please complete the Google form below if you would like to attend the Solemnity All Saints Whole School Mass

2023 World Teachers' Day
On Friday 27 October, Wollemi celebrated its teachers for their skilled work in educating, inspiring and supporting our students.
Wollemi Students had been invited to nominate a teacher who has been a big help to them and why. It was so beautiful to see many students who have shared their appreciation of our teachers for their tireless efforts in teaching Wollemi men. A special lunch was also organised for our amazing teachers, role models and mentors as well as a gift of a Wollemi umbrella to each staff which came in handy that afternoon!
Hats off to teachers this World Teachers’ Day especially our incredible Wollemi teachers.
St Vincent De Paul Homeless Appeal

‘Care, Coin and Can’ Wednesday 15 November (Week 6)
With Christmas fast approaching, there will be many in our community who are facing the prospect of a bleak Christmas; especially our homeless. Pope Francis wrote:
“Before pouring out His love for us on the cross, Jesus shares His final wishes. He tells us that the good we do to one of our least brothers and sisters – hungry, thirsty, strangers, in need, sick, imprisoned – we do to Him (Mt 25:37-40)”
With this in mind, our Wollemi SRC has decided to work with the St Vincent de Paul Society to put together ‘snack packs’ to help the homeless or those struggling in our community this Christmas.
Our SRC needs the help of our Wollemi families with this endeavour, as such they have arranged a number of activities this term to assist in assembling as many snack packs as possible.
Donation of items: Each class/year group has been allocated a specific item/s to bring into school to contribute to the snack packs. These are listed below:
Primary students are to bring in their donated items to school during Weeks 3 to Week 5 and place them in the boxes in their classrooms. Secondary students are to bring in their items to school on Wednesday 15 November (Week 6). These will be collected on their entry to school by our SRC Representatives. It would be appropriate that older children contribute in some way to the cost of this item so that they may experience the important spirit of giving. The last day for donations of items is Friday 24 November (Week 7).
It would be very much appreciated if all items donated are of a quality brand name. Due to health regulations, no peanut-based items are permitted and please check the expiry date of the items donated.
Mufti Day and Sale of Cans of Drinks and Zoopa Doopas for Years 2-11 - Wednesday 15 November (Week 6) - On this day, boys are to come to school in casual clothes and are to bring a gold coin donation. Money will be collected as students enter the school gates in the morning.
SRC will also be selling cans of drink and Zoopa Doopas at lunchtime in the COLA area.
Can of drinks may be purchased for $2
Zoopa Doopas for $1
Students wishing to purchase these items are to bring money on the day. There will be no pre-orders available.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support. Wollemi has a strong tradition of generosity. Last year, we made over 500 care packs for the homeless and raised over $250 towards St Vincent De Paul. I am sure this year will be equally as successful, if not better!

Term 3 House Champions
House spirit and unity are such an important part of life at Wollemi. On Tuesday of Week 4, it was so great to celebrate our House Champions for Term 3 and to publicly acknowledge their achievements.
The Wollemi House competition recognises all aspects of endeavour with boys being awarded house points for their contributions and efforts in a range of areas from sport to classroom application and achievements, behaviour and house competitions.
Congratulations to Wyuna House in Primary and Mundoora in Secondary for being House Champions for Term 3.
Wyuna and Mundoora boys enjoyed a well-deserved sausage sizzle and a can of drink - a welcome treat on a hot Wollemi summer’s day!
A big thank you to Will Marunicic and Petelo Devine, the Mundoora and Wyuna House Captains respectively, and all the senior Mundoora students who helped to set up, cook and run this celebration. It is very much appreciated and ensured the smooth running of the event.
Congratulations once again to both houses. I wish all Houses the best of luck for the Term 4 House Competition.

Wiburd Shield Cricket Competition

On Tuesday last week, Wollemi College played Hills Grammar in the Wiburd Shield Cricket competition. The day started well, with Captain Raphael Aldous winning the toss and elected to bowl first. There were some great efforts with the ball and in the field. The pick of the bowlers were Aadi Jain and Masroor Tariq taking 3/45 and 2/26 respectively.
Respectable bowling throughout restricted Hills Grammar to being all out for 267. A fantastic achievement to bowl the opposition out, having batsmen who play representative cricket. In reply, the run chase got off to a shaky start. But after being 2/6 off 4 overs, Jacob Jordan joined Aadi Jain at the crease. The pair put on a fantastic partnership of 92, showcasing their skills of finding gaps in the field and big-hitting boundaries. Aadi and Jacob were the pick of the batters with Aadi getting 41 and Jacob getting the highest individual score ever for Wollemi with 65. Great work Jacob.
While Wollemi feel short of Hills Grammar's total. We did also break the school record for the most runs scored in an innings. Wollemi was bowled out for 200 in the last over, surpassing the previous high score of 110!
A fantastic effort by the team on what was a very hot and dry day. Special thanks to Mr de Villiers for assisting with the team.

Midford Wollemi Uniform Shop News
Uniform Price Notification from Midford
To the Wollemi College Community,
As a result of a recent review, some minor adjustments are required to the retail prices of the Wollemi College uniforms and accessories range. This is the first review of retail price that Midford has made in the last 2 years.
Over the last 2 years, Midford has mostly sheltered our retail partners and customers from price increases by absorbing fluctuating exchange rate costs.
Unfortunately, over the past year, our supply chain has been affected dramatically by COVID and currency fluctuations. The costs have increased so sharply now that we are forced to raise our prices, the whole supply chain is affected by the cost of materials, manufacturing, labour as well as transportation. Therefore, we are left with no option but to pass on some of the increases to our partners and customers. This is a decision that was not made lightly and is necessary for Midford to remain competitive and at the forefront of school wear innovation and supply.
A total of 16 items require a price increase, based on the manufacturing costs. On many items, there is no change in price. These price increases will take effect from the 1st of September 2023.
It is Midford’s commitment to continue to plan our business in a way that provides high-quality clothing at a price that offers great value for money to our customers. We will continually monitor our supply chain for future benefits in terms of cost to our customers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wollemi College for your continued support of Midford and we look forward to providing quality schoolwear and service to the school community in the future.

All the money raised in Lowana Fete will be for this new building.
Please come to the Lowana Fete this coming Nov 19, 2023, and together we can build this new Lowana building!
