Eucharistic Procession
Last week Wollemi saw a number of important events take place. On Wednesday we held our annual Eucharistic Procession. We were fortunate to count on Fr Inigo Martinez, Vicar of Opus Dei in Australia, as well as Our Lady of the Rosary parish priests Fr Brendan and Fr Jeff to officiate. A big thank you also to the team of parents who spend most of the day preparing the altars, flower arrangements, and a range of other jobs that helped make the procession such a success. The whole event stood out to me for the prayerful atmosphere and the genuine devotion displayed by all. Many of our new parents attending left greatly impressed by the piety displayed by our boys and the public display of faith by our community.
A special intention
One of our main prayer intentions as a community is a little boy by the name of Henry Field. Henry attends Reception (pre-Kindy) at Tangara. His parents, Jay and Antoinette, are both Pared graduates. Last week they learned that Henry has a tumour in his brain. I ask that you join me in supporting the Tangara and Redfield communities in their intense prayer for young Henry.
Around the grounds
Last Friday we had our Athletics Carnival. The day ran very smoothly thanks to the efforts of Mr. Bayliss and the rest of the staff. I was pleasantly surprised by the high number of parents who were able to join us in cheering on the boys.
A special mention goes to a number of our senior boys who volunteered their time (spending a good part of their day) to help serve in the Canteen. The local athletics club relies on the canteen to raise much-needed money for the club. Unfortunately, they did not have sufficient staff to operate it on the day. It was great to see our students step in to help. Their generosity was much appreciated by the athletics club, who will remember the quality of our students. Well done boys!
Also in the sporting arena, a big congratulations to Nikalai and Timofey Sakalauski, who represented NSW at the 2023 Judo National Championships in the Gold Coast last weekend. If this was not achievement enough, both boys medalled, with Timofey coming 1st in his category, and Nikalai 3rd. Well done boys; we are so proud of you!
This week Wollemi students will be competing in a Futsal Regional Competition at every age level. A lot of extra training has taken place over the last few weeks to prepare the boys for this competition. A big thank you to all the staff (Mr. Tu’ipolotu, Mr. Bayliss, Mr. Ison, Mr. Dominici, Mr. Lockley, and Mr. Tamayo) who have helped train and organise each of our teams, and also to the many Secondary students who have volunteered at lunchtime to train the younger boys.
Study Smart Blitz
We continue to work on our yearly goal of establishing a Culture of Excellence at Wollemi. For our ‘blitz’ for the last three weeks of term, we are focusing on Study Smart (see poster below). The second half of Term 2 is a time for assignments and assessments, as teachers measure and gather data to inform our Semester 1 academic reports. These reports will be available through the Parent Portal at the end of the term.
As part of our current Blitz, we are encouraging all our students to develop good habits of daily study, as distinct from daily homework. This will enable them to avoid the stress of facing multiple deadlines, as well as positively impacting the quality of their work and assessments. It is also a fundamental skill as they move toward their senior Secondary School years. I am sharing the focus of our blitz to help encourage all parents to raise this topic with their sons at home. It also gives me a chance to thank our Year 12 students, who present such a wonderful example to their younger schoolmates as they prepare for their HSC trials early next term.
Coming up
We are looking forward to having many dads from both Wollemi and Montgrove join us here at Wollemi this Friday (16 June) from 6 pm for our Term 2 Dad’s Night. A large team of volunteers has done a great job so far preparing for the night, which will have a ‘subcontinental’ flavour. The food promises to be epic, and the atmosphere memorable. Not to be missed.
Next week, we will celebrate the feast of St Josemaria (which this year falls during the holidays on 26 June) with a Mass in honour of St Josemaria on Thursday 23 June at Penrith at 7:30 pm. You are all cordially invited.
I wish every one of our parents, teachers, and students a wonderful winter break. I thank you for your dedication, support, and hard work during the first half of the year, and hope that after a well-deserved break, we all return to Wollemi with renewed energies to continue making this school such a special place.

From the Chaplain

After our beautiful Eucharistic Procession last Wednesday, we can remember the big intentions that we put in Our Lord's hands: Peace in Ukraine and the World, the families, the fruits of the World Youth Day in Lisbon and the Diocesan Synod of Parramatta.
We will celebrate the feast of St Josemaria with a Mass in St Nicholas of Myra Parish, Penrith, on Thursday 22, at 7,30pm. Every year this is an opportunity to give thanks to God for the life of the saint who inspired the PARED schools.
You would like to watch this video, where St Josemaria reflects on living pluralism in social life, because “it is not enough to manage things with equity and human justice: we need to put our hearts into them”.
We have been able to purchase a new chalice and paten [pictured below] to replace our rather old and battered Sacred Vessels used in Holy Mass. This was thanks to the generosity of a single donor who wishes to remain anonymous. We are incredibly grateful and know that at every Mass where those vessels are used their generosity will be remembered.
Fr Felix, Chaplain
From the Head of Primary

With two weeks remaining before the Winter break, the foot is still planted firmly on the accelerator! This Thursday and Friday, for the first time at Wollemi, our Year 4 boys will go on an overnight stay at Taronga Zoo - the ZooSnooz! With the guidance of our teachers, parent volunteers and zoo staff, the boys will experience the Zoo like never before. Without giving too much away, when the general public departs the Zoo for the day, Year 4 will have Taronga Zoo all to themselves. They will see the animals at night, during their most active state, during the evening zoo tour and have a close encounter with a furry or scaly friend. On the following morning, seeing the animal feeding sessions, before the Zoo officially opens, will be one of many highlights our future zoologists will experience. During this incredible opportunity, our boys will develop and grow in resilience, independence and confidence. I am very excited about sharing this experience with them. Stay tuned for the post ZooSnooz write up.

2023 PARED Cup
I felt my blood pumping around my body as I struggled to grab the basketball off of Altair, my team lagging behind me. Altair did not let up their onslaught of shots. I called for the ball from my team but it was never given. The subs rushed onto the court but it was all in vain. We lost 14-10. On the 30th of May, Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Redfield College for the PARED Cup and Pilgrimage.
The day began with a long bus ride to Redfield. Luckily that time was shortened by a rosary led by Mr Pacquing. I nervously walked down the bus walkway to sit down once more on the brick. We eagerly awaited a Redfield teacher to guide us through their magnificent school. A man with a gleaming smile led us to a sitting area, and there it was. The PARED Cup, sitting there idly in all its glory. But before we could gush over its beauty, we ran to some benches near the Our Lady of the Lake Shrine. The rosary was long and holy as Mr Harb and a few students led us in prayer.
The anticipation was finally over. It was time. The first game - Rugby. We had not trained for this. I knew victory would not be with us and I was right. We lost 3-0. After our first loss as a house it was time for European Handball. We tried our best but Castor was too tall and caught the ball out of the air. And so we lost the second game 8-1. Then our third game was basketball. This was our game. I believed in myself. I was ready. But we lost again.
Then it was lunch and I was deprived of hope. I couldn’t eat my sandwich but I still walked out onto the soccer pitch with the ball on my mind. Whee! The whistle blew and Hydras started. We dived for the ball. I was the right defender and one of their players rushed towards my side. My leg collided with the incoming ball… corner! It was a clear pass for Hydras. They kicked the ball off the crossbar. “Yes!” The day was over and they won the game 1-0.
We sighed as our feet dragged on the floor towards the benches. And to no one's surprise, Redfield won the cup. All in all, it didn’t feel very good to lose the day but Redfield were quite good and deserved the victory.

Year 9 Stand Tall Conference
Last Thursday, our Year 9 students had the opportunity to attend the “Stand Tall” Conference at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour. The theme of the day was “Time to Fly”. The day was aimed at inspiring hope and helping students kick themselves into action to be better people. There were a number of incredible speakers including NRL star, Nicho Hynes. There were several other speakers, as well as musical performances from performers such as Timomatic.
When debriefing with the students after the conference, the unanimous verdict was that the two most impactful speakers were two gentlemen by the names of Derek Rabelo and Michael Crossland. Derek Rabelo and Michael Crossland are two remarkable individuals who, despite what the difficult circumstances life has thrust upon them, have refused to be defined by them. Their incredible journeys are a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of determination.
Rabelo's story is one of extraordinary courage and unwavering passion. Born in Brazil with a rare condition called congenital glaucoma, Derek lost his eyesight completely at birth. While many would have considered this a severe limitation, Derek saw it as an opportunity to overcome boundaries and chase his dreams. He spoke beautifully about life with what many would consider a debilitating disability. Instead of offering excuses, he spoke about being supported by family, and fostering a deep faith and trust in God. With this faith and support, he was able to achieve his lifelong dream some years ago of surfing Pipeline - one of the most dangerous surf breaks in the world. He is now married with two children of his own.
Michael Crossland's life has been a testament to resilience and the power of embracing challenges. Diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer at just 11 months old, Michael's life took an unexpected turn. He underwent countless surgeries and faced grueling chemotherapy treatments that left him physically weakened. Despite the odds stacked against him, Michael chose to rise above his circumstances. Michael’s fundamental message to the students was that setbacks are truly opportunities for growth.
Derek and Michael’s stories remind us that the human spirit is unconquerable. Their journeys inspire us to embrace challenges, believe in ourselves, and pursue our dreams with unwavering determination. They teach us to turn adversity into a force for good and live life to the fullest, regardless of circumstances.
Bernie James, Assistant Formation
Year 12 Chemistry
As we approach the end of our longest topic, Organic Chemistry, our 12 Chemistry class has been studying the formation, properties and uses of a range of polymers. While it is not a mandatory component of the course, the students had a go at producing nylon, a polyamide produced via condensation polymerisation. It was very successful and a great opportunity for the boys to see first-hand how a very useful material is produced from scratch.
Wollemi Man Award

Congratulations to Peter Wiggins (Year 11) who was presented with the Wollemi Man Award at our Secondary Assembly in Week 6 of this term.
Peter was awarded this accolade for his sportsmanship and compassion to others. During the recent Hills Zone Cross Country Carnival, Peter was running with a fellow Wollemi student when the other student began to feel unwell. Rather than leaving his mate behind, Peter waited for his fellow Wollemi student and assisted him across the finish line, completing the race together. Peter’s selflessness was acknowledged by the crowd at the finish line who applauded and cheered his act of goodwill. This type of sportsmanship, leadership and care for others is great to see and goes to the heart of our mission at Wollemi.
Congratulations once again to Peter. He will receive a Certificate of Recognition, 25 House Points for his House and a $20 gift voucher courtesy of Caddens Woolworths.
Well Done Peter.

2023 Eucharistic Procession

Last Wednesday we celebrated the Eucharistic Procession here at Wollemi. It is that time of the year when instead of visiting our Lord in the Chapel, He is the one who comes out to our playground to visit us. The Eucharistic Procession was a truly special moment from Wollemi this year when the entire school stopped and spent time showing our love for our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. It was really moving to see how everyone in the school community contributed to this solemn occasion in different ways. From the mums who helped set up those beautiful altars, and prepared afternoon tea for our visiting priests, to the year 12 boys leading the procession with so much patience, from the staff who worked hard to prepare the booklets and other aspects of the procession to the students who helped with the singing and the clean up. And everyone did it with so much love! I didn't hear a single complaint. I can't help but be sincerely grateful for the awesome school that we have here at Wollemi, to Fr Inigo and the local priests who came to join us and for all the graces and blessings that our Lord would have given to us on such a wonderful occasion.
Jack Johnson, Director Of Personalised Education
Secondary May Pilgrimage
Every year, during May students at Wollemi do a pilgrimage to a Shrine of Our Lady or to a local Church. The idea is to go and show our love for Mary with a small token of affection and to entrust to her all our intentions by saying the Rosary.
This year was extra special as our secondary Pilgrimage was celebrated on 24th May, Our Lady Help of Christians, Patroness of Australia. So we prayed for all the Wollemi families as well as for our entire country. The students visited different locations by Houses. I was impressed by the respect and devotion the boys showed when we prayed in silence in front of our Lady. They all represented the school in a wonderful way.
Then we returned to school and had a BBQ Lunch (courtesy of Mr. Dom Younes' generous donation of sausages) and a sports competition to wrap up the Pilgrimage day. Many boys came afterward and mentioned to me that they had had a great day. I was very happy to witness with my own eyes the effects of peace and joy in the boys that entrusting everything to our Lady brings about.
I would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Vassallo and to the Secondary teachers who contributed to making this event possible.

The PARED Academy has invited an esteemed international guest speaker to address the parents in our school community, and we warmly invite you to join us for this transformative session taking place on Tuesday 25th July at the Montgrove College COLA (7 pm Registration, for a 7:30 pm start).
Parenting in the 21st century has become an extreme sport and calls for new kinds of agility when it comes to helping your children build the strength of character and confidence in what matters most. It is with great pleasure that we present our speaker, Dr. Karen E. Bohlin, director of the Practical Wisdom Project at the Abigail Adams Institute in Cambridge, and a Research Affiliate at the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University. An international leader in character education and applied virtue ethics, she draws on three decades of teaching and leadership experience at both the secondary and university level. A highly sought-after speaker and consultant, she has addressed thousands of parents, educators and leaders on what it means to help young people thrive and flourish.
In her presentation ‘Parenting without Losing Your Mind: A compass to navigate with joy and purpose’, Karen will elaborate on the principles, strategies and practical wisdom parents can use to embrace the occasions for growth in the myriad of challenges they navigate each day. Athletics Carnival

The eagerly awaited Wollemi Athletics Carnival took place on Friday, Week 7 at Blair Oval with students of all ages showcasing their athleticism and team spirit. The day was a great success thanks to the work of all of our teachers who ensured the day ran smoothly and for the students for making sure they were in the right place at the right time. The event was a great success, fostering healthy competition, camaraderie, and a sense of school pride.
There were some fantastic performances throughout the day, highlighted by John McDonald in the 16s 100m breaking not only the 16s 100m record but also the overall school record for the 100m with a time of 11.44 seconds! Congratulations John!
A massive thank you must go to a number of Year 12 boys who volunteered their time assisting in the canteen when the Athletics club canteen was understaffed. The ladies in the canteen said that you were extremely helpful and you could come back to help any time. Well done gentlemen.
Congratulations to Araluen House for winning the House Chants competition to round out our day before the 100m finals. All houses put a lot of time and effort into their chants and that was clear to see on the day with great passion being on display.
Thank you to Mr Lockley who was in charge of inputting all the results throughout the day. It is not an easy job and your work is much appreciated.
Once again, thank you to all students and staff for ensuring the day was a great success!
We have a number of students who have qualified to compete at the Hills Zone Athletics Carnival. The names of those boys will be published at a later date.
The Hills Zone Athletics Carnival will be at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre in Week 7, Term 3.

Futsal Regional Championships

Thank you to the players for a great showing of commitment, skill, and determination. You made the coaching staff incredibly proud!
A special mention to Elijah Leggatt (Year 2), Kirbie Amituanai (Year 3), Jeremiah Tu'ipulotu (Year 3) and Christian Geagea (Year 3), who were the youngest squad members and also scored goals and kept clean sheets!
I would like to thank Under 13's coach Mr Lockley, who did a fantastic job with the 13's (and were unlucky to miss out on a spot in the semis on goal difference) and Roman Gill of Year 8, who coached the under 10's white and other under 13's team. Roman showed true leadership and grace while coaching.
See you all at the State Championships.
Mr Tu'pulotu
AICES and CIS Cross Countries
Wollemi College was well represented at the AICES (Secondary) and CIS (Primary and Secondary) Cross Countries over the last 2 weeks at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park.
We had Koshin Kandregula, Micah Armour, Augustine Phua, Klim Drozd, Brett Sequeria and Nirvan Gurung compete at the AICES Cross Country as part of the Hills Zone team.
Koshin Kandregula finished 8th in the 16s race, qualifying him for the CIS Secondary Cross Country!
Koshin joined Kirbie Amituanai, Oscar Baird, Thomas Portelli and Elijah Leggatt at the CIS Cross Country. These 5 boys represented our school fantastically well and should be commended for the effort they put in to get to this point.
2023 Judo National Championship
Over the last long weekend, Wollemi students Nikalai and Timofey Sakalouski participated in the 2023 Judo National Championship held in Gold Coast, Queensland. Participants came from all over Australia. Judo is a martial art sport that originated in Japan and which requires high levels of individual’s endurance, flexibility, resilience, and strength. Typically a judo contest consists of various techniques aimed at throwing or getting your opponent to the ground. Timofey and Nikalai represented NSW at this event and were placed 1st (Timofey) and 3rd (Nikalai) in their respective weight and age categories. While being a highly physically demanding sport judo also teaches discipline, respect and humility. We wish Nikalai and Timofey all the best in their future judo endeavours.
